  3. Warm Up – You will be turning this in.(Work to be done as soon as you enter the room) • What did you learn/study in Global Studies last year? What was your favorite area to study. -Map reading skills, Europe, North America (2-3 sentences) (If you are new to the school have you ever studied Geography? What did you study last year instead?) 2. List eight academic words that come to mind when you hear the word “geography.”

  4. With your elbow partner 1. Share what you wrote down on your “Warm Up” with your elbow partner. 2. Come up with a list of five words you can agree on and feel proud of. Also…. Each group is going to write their five words on the board. Be prepared to talk about what you write.

  5. Write in your groups Are all the words the same? If not… why are they different? After all what is the definition of Geography?.... As a group come up with your own definition of Geography.

  6. What is Geography? More importantly why are we studying it? Geography is more than just memorizing maps. It is the study of a wide range of issues and places. Geographers developed the five themes of geography to go beyond a simple understanding of the world. Over the course of the semester we will look at different regions of the world with a focus on Africa, the Middle East, and Asia. We will need to use these five themes in order to understand these regions of the world.

  7. Five Themes of Geography Location- is where the place or thing that we are looking at is located. Absolute Location: exact location, it’s unique to that place. -coordinates, address Relative Location: -describes the location, not specific. ex. It’s close by, it’s straight ahead.

  8. Five Themes of Geography • Regions- Geographers use the theme of regions to group places that have something in common. This common characteristic can either be human or physical. Physical – grouping of something that occurs in the world naturally. - mountains, rainforest. Human – grouping of something that is human made. -school district, countries, languages.

  9. Five Themes of Geography Place- Describes human and physical features at a specific location. Physical – its hilly, flat. Human- how people live, what they look like, religion, language. • Movement- explains how people, goods, and ideas get from one place to another.

  10. Five Themes of Geography Human-Environment Interaction- How people affect their environment and how the environment affects them. -Weather ----> Clothes -Pollution ----> Destroys the environment Now we are going to practice….and yes you will be turning this in. Start the semester off right.
