  2. Power of Agriculture • With animals and plants domesticated, humans had more time to focus on specific crafts. As well as: • Settle Permanently • Governments formed • Technology improved • Writing Developed • Maintained a food supply

  3. What made communities grow into cities? • Good food production: As long as people are fed, the population will grow. • Migration: People would see a prosperous area and move there to live a good life. • Do people still do this today? Examples?

  4. Changes of City Life • Over time, people had to transition from their nomadic village ways into a city dwelling urban life. Four stages occur: • Technology • Development of Trade • Social Changes • Development of Religion

  5. Technology • Development of large elaborate irrigation systems. People no longer needed to settle near rivers. • Surplus of food was established and populations grow. • Not having to worry with food & survival, people began to have time for other things. • People began working on skills other than farming like pottery, metal work, and weaving.

  6. Development of Trade • New products created a trading network. • Certain areas had good that other area lacked and needed. • Are goods the only things that were traded?

  7. Fueling Trade • Two very important inventions allowed for trade. • The wheel: allowed the building of carts & carriages. • The Sail: Harness the wind & navigate rivers & seas. Allowed for easy transportation of goods. • Long – Distance trading had been born.

  8. Social Changes • Cooperation & Teamwork; gave birth to social classes. • Someone had to step up as a leader; others had to get the work done. • Wealthy citizens provided the power/money. • Poorer citizens completed the work.

  9. Development of Religion • Religion became more organized. • During the New Stone Age, people worshipped gods and goddesses who they believed had power over the rain, wind, and other forces of nature.
