  1. Driver's Training Academy Palletized Load System

  2. M1075 Cargo Truck is equipped with a Load Handling System (LHS) capable of self-loading and unloading.

  3. COMPONENTS ON RIGHT SIDE OF TRUCK 1.Auxiliary Fuel Tank; 85 gallon capacity. ·Self-recovery Winch (optional): SRW Winch can be used from the front or rear and is controlled from the cab. Controls are placed in the cab for safety. 2.Stowage box for all of the BII items. 3.Muffler for vehicle exhaust system. 4.Hydraulic oil reservoir for the main hydraulics such as the Load Handling System LHS and the Material Handling Crane MHC, or CHU. 5.Spare tire with the davit. 6. Collapsible Ladder: Ladder is used to service the truck or to get up on other elevated areas.

  4. COMPONENTS ON LEFT SIDE OF TRUCK 1. Air filter. 2. Battery box with an easily removable cover. 3. Control Box (LOAD HANDLING SYSTEM (LHS). This box contains control valves for the LHS. 4. Main Fuel tank: The fuel tank capacity is 100 gallons. 5. Fuel/Water Separator and Air dryer system that contains two air dryers, a pre-filter, and a pre-cooler. 6. Battery shut off system. Prevents loss of battery power when vehicle is shut off.

Location and Description of Palletized Load System Trailer (PLST) M1076 Major Components ·The M1076 trailer is a 3 axle wagon style trailer with a 16.5 ton payload capacity equipped with a flatrack that is interchangeable between truck and trailer. The combination of truck and trailer provides the combined payload capacity of 33 tons. The flatracks are lifted on and off the truck and trailer utilizing the PLS Load handling system. The trailer can be loaded or unloaded within 5 minutes utilizing the LHS remote hook.

  7. Steering axle The Palletized Load System Trailer has a turntable style steering axle. Because of this steering system, the PLST is very difficult to back. Backing in a straight line is the only way to back the PLST.

  8. Palletized Load System Trailer M1076 (PLST) (Left Side) 1.Spare Tire with Winch ·Tire is located underneath the trailer frame. ·The PLST contains a winch for lowering and raising the spare tire. 2. Trailer Safety Chains and Air Lines

  9. M1077/M1077A1 The flat rack can be loaded from the ground or a loading dock and loaded between truck and trailer using the truck-mounted LHS. The M1077 Flat rack will accommodate uniformly distributed payloads of 33,000 lbs (14,982 kg). The M1077AI Flat rack will accommodate uniformly distributed payloads of 32,300 lbs (14,664 kg).

  10. M1 FLATRACK The flat rack is a welded steel, wooden floored, flat cargo body with folding walls for stacking. The flat rack can be loaded from the ground, a loading dock or truck to trailer using the truck-mounted LHS. The flat rack will accommodate nominal loads of 29,500 lbs (13,393 kg) including sideboards and tarp when loaded on PLS truck or trailer. The flat rack will accommodate loads up to 31,400 lbs (14,255 kg) including sideboards and tarp when not loaded on PLS truck or trailer. The M1 can be stacked 9 high for container ship loading.

  14. Palletized Load System Foot Pedals and Lower Controls 1. Over the Crest Window - The over the crest window is located by the operators left foot in the bottom of the PLS Cab. This window provides visibility to the operator when maneuvering in difficult terrain. Also used to determine fording depth by use of center bar across window 2. Service Brake Treadle - Applies vehicles air brakes 3. Throttle Control - Controls the speed of the engine electronically through speed sensor mounted on throttle pedal.

PLS Engine ON/OFF Switch and Ether Start Button 1.On/Off Start Switch: Starting the Palletized Load System will be covered in detail latter in this course. 2.Ether Start Button: The ether start button is used when the temperature is between +45 degrees and - 25 degrees. Cold weather starting will be covered in detail later in this class.

Central Tire Inflation System CTIS • The CTIS provides the operator with the option to inflate or deflate the vehicles • tires from inside of the cab based on current driving conditions. • Rotary Selector Switch selects 1 of 4 tire pressures for maximum traction and minimum tire wear under various conditions and speed limits as follows: • 1.Highway - 55 mph (88 km/h) • 2.Cross Country - 40 mph (64 km/h) • 3.Mud, sand, and snow - 12 mph (19 km/h) • 4.Emergency - five mph (8 km/h)·

PLS Transmission Range Controls • R = Reverse for backing the truck. • N = Neutral, use this position when starting the • engine, parking the truck, or if the truck is • left unattended while the engine is running • with the parking brake. • D = Drive, use this position for all normal driving • conditions. The transmission will up-shift and • downshift automatically. Transmission will • start in second gear (low range only) • or first gear (high range only). • 1 = Low gear hold, provides the greatest torque • and maximum engine braking effect. • 2 = Second gear hold, use when pulling through • mud or snow. • 3 = Restricts up-shifts to no higher than 3rd gear. • 4 = Restricts up-shifts to no higher than 4th gear. • DO NOT SHIFT = Indicates (lights red) the operating • condition under which shifting would cause damage • to the equipment.

PLS Transfer Case Shift Lever • The PLS Transfer Case Shift Lever provides the • operator with the option of selecting high (H) for • normal highway operation or low (L) for adverse • off-road driving and steep grades. • ·Low Range = Set transfer case shift lever to L (Low) • for adverse off-road driving and steep grades. • ·High Range = Set transfer case shift lever to H (High) • for highway driving and secondary roads. • ·Note = If transfer case shift lever is hard to move, push • in button and set transmission range selector to “D”, • then back to “N”. If transfer case will not shift, select • “R” then “N” and try to shift the transfer case lever • again. If transfer case will still not shift, select “D” • then back to “N”

  25. PLS Load Handling System (LHS) Joystick The PLS LHS Joystick is a 3 position spring loaded joystick used to load or unload the truck all from inside the cab. After you release the joystick is will spring back into the center position. To load, push the joystick up. To Unload push the joystick down. Springs to center position when not in use.

PLS Hydraulic Mode Selector Switch The Hydraulic Mode Selector Switch provides power and selects the mode of operation for the Load Handling System (LHS). 1 = OFF 2 = AUTO The hydraulic circuit is activated and the system will automatically respond to joystick movement by the operator. 3 = MAN H.A. This setting bypasses the automatic sequencing circuit to manually operate the hook arm only.     4 = MAN M.F. It bypasses the automatic sequencing circuit to manually operate the middle frame only. 5 = MAN TRANS. Used when automatic circuits have failed. 6 = CRANE/SRW. Used to switch hydraulic power to either the Crane or Self-Recovery Winch (SRW). CAUTION DURING DRIVING OPERATIONS, LHS MODE SELECTOR MUST BE PLACED IN "OFF" POSITION OR HYDRAULIC SYSTEM OVERHEATING WILL RESULT.

  27. PLS Circuit Breakers Located to the right of the operator, just above the Transfer Case Shift Lever are the PLS circuit Breakers. These Circuit Breakers are manual reset type. Each circuit breaker is labeled for its function. There are 23 circuits in the cab and 1 outside on the left side of vehicle.

  28. PLS Heater and Defrost Controls ·AIR CONTROLS amount of outside air entering cab through fresh air vent. ·FAN CONTROL Controls speed of heater fan. ·HEAT CONTROL Controls amount of hot air entering cab. ·DEFROST CONTROL Controls amount of hot air blown on windshield.
