  11. What is “mythology?” • Myths are stories with gods and goddesses. The stories often explain how or why things occur.

  12. Why There are Extra Days in the Year Of all the ancient Egyptian gods, Ra was the most loved and most powerful. He ruled the people of Egypt wisely and kindly for many years.

  13. Why There are Extra Days in the Year Since he was able to see into the future, he learned something that brought him great sorrow. His daughter, Nut, would one day have a child who would destroy Ra’s body.

  14. Why There are Extra Days in the Year Ra put a curse on his daughter to prevent this, saying that Nut could bear no children on any day of the year.

  15. Nut, however, loved children and deeply longed to have a child of her own. She sought her brother, Thoth, for help.

  16. Wise Thoth soon found a plan that would help his distraught sister. He challenged the moon god, Konsu, to a game of senet.

  17. Konsu’s one major weakness was that he couldn’t resist a challenge or a game of skill. Not only did Konsu accept Thoth’s challenge, he also willingly bet moonlight that he would defeat Thoth in the game.

  18. The gods played game after game, but Thoth, the wisest of all of Ra’s children, won every game. At the end, Thoth had collected enough moonlight to make five extra days. Since Konsu had lost so much moonlight, the moon still wanes, or weakens, for a few days each month.

  19. Since Thoth won five extra days, they were added to the end of the old year and the beginning of the new year. So now a year has 365 days instead of 360 days.

  20. Each of Nut’s five children were born on these extra days. While Ra’s curse worked—she had no children on any day of the year,--the extra days allowed her to have children in spite of Ra’s curse.

  21. The future that Ra foresaw now came true at last. One of Nut’s children, Orsis, destroyed the body of Ra. The great god could no longer dwell on earth, instead he became the sun-god. Ra could still help his people.

  22. Every day he traveled across the sky in the form of the sun, giving light and warmth to all of Egypt. Then at night, Ra carried the souls of the dead to the Underworld in his majestic golden ship.
