Battle of Fort Sumter • The location of the battle was Charleston County, South Carolina. • The Battle of Fort Sumter took place from April 12-14, 1861. • The winner of the battle was the Confederate Forces. • The Union commander (Northern leader) was Robert Anderson. • The Confederate commander (Southern leader) was P.J. Beauregard.

Battle of Shiloh • The Battle of Shiloh took place from April 6-7,1862. • The battle took place at Hardin County, Tennessee. • The Union Forces won the battle. • The Union commanders were Ulysses S. Grant and Don Carlos Buell. • The Confederate commanders were Albert Sidney Johnston and P.G.T. Beauregard.

Battle of New Orleans • The Battle of New Orleans took place from April 25th - May 1st,1862. • The Union Forces won this battle. • The Battle of New Orleans took place in New Orleans and St. Bernard Parish in Louisiana. • The Union commanders were David G. Farragut and Benjamin Butler. • The Confederacy commander was Mansfield Lovell.

Battle of Chancellorsville • The Battle of Chancellorsville was also known as the Battle of Fredericksburg. • The Battle took place form May 1st to 4th in Chancellorsville, Virginia. • The Union Forces, under the command of General Joseph Hooker, had about 130,000 soldiers. • The Confederate Forces, under the command of General Robert E. Lee, had about 60,000 soldiers. • In this battle, 18,753 people were wounded.

Battle of Gettysburg • Union and Confederate soldiers fought for three days in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. • Since there was a large amount of lives lost, President Lincoln dedicated a cemetery. • Lincoln donated the cemetery and gave the Gettysburg Address on November 19, 1863. • The Union Forces won this battle.

  7. Extra Facts • The women did various things during the war. They took care of the home, farm, and children. They also were spies and nurses. • The life of a soldier was tough and a test of their strength. Years away from home, inadequate food and shelter, disease, hot summers and cold winters. • The soldiers called the tents they lived in “dog” tents. • The drums were a major part of the war. From wake up calls, to breakfast calls, to drill calls. • The amount of baggage the soldiers carried varied. A Southern soldier typically carried less then a Northern soldier. This is because the Southern soldier didn’t have as much available to him.

  8. Summary • In the end, the Union Forces won. The South was impoverished and slavery was abolished. The national government was strengthened.
