Southern Economy - Plantations • Plantation Economy • Controlled by rich and large landowners • Also called “Planters” • Grow cash crops • i.e. Tobacco, Cotton • Mostly self-sufficient • Grow and build what they need on the plantation • Few large cities • Requires lots of labor • Indentured servants, then slaves • Thomas Jefferson's mansion • Monticello

  3. Cash Crops • Cash Crop • A crop grown to be sold, not to be used by the farmer • Opposite of “subsistence” farming • Tobacco • Mostly MD, VA, NC • Rice and Indigo • Further south in SC, GA Tobacco Field

Transportation in the South • Southern colonies were connected by many rivers • Boats are major source of transportation • Quicker and cheaper than going by land • i.e. horse and wagon • Plantations were usually built on rivers, reducing the need for cities with harbors Sailboats carried cargo throughout the Southern colonies

  5. Comparing North and South Based on these notes and your reading of Sections 2 and 3, complete the chart comparing the Northern and Southern colonies. Work quietly with a partner. This topic will be part of the essay for the Chapter 3 test.
