  13. Slaves were controlled under strict rules or codes. This is one example:

  14. Slavery, as such, was not eliminated in the Americas until 1888 when finally Brazil outlawed it. The first major uprisings were in what was known as Saint Domingue, the French portion of this island. On the Breda Plantation, a massive uprising gave birth to what is now Haiti. Persons such as Toussaint L’ Ouverture, Petion and Christophe took part in this movement.
