  1. Taking Notes on Notecards Eng 1: Research Paper

  2. Only write ONE NOTE per notecard (one fact or one quote)

  3. Quotes & Summaries • If you’re recording a direct quote, write the note onto the notecard in quotations. • REMEMBER: you may only have 2 direct quotes in your paper, so you should only have 2 direct quotes on notecards. • All of your notecards should be paraphrases of what your source said. Don’t copy the sentence & change a word or two. Don’t copy the information word-for-word on the notecard

  4. Making Source Cards • If you decide to take notes from a source, you must make a source card for it (later PowerPoint) and you must record the source’s information. If it’s online, it’s not a bad idea to print it out for later reference (and so you have the full web address).

  5. On each notecard, write down which source it came from on the top left line, including a page number (if there is one). • If it’s a source with an author, write the author’s last name. • If it’s a source without an author, write the source’s title. • If there’s a page number, write that down too. • On the top right line, record the basic subject of the card (ex: early life, music award, etc.)
