Location of Mississippi • Location can be either relative or absolute • Relative location- a place compared to other places • Mississippi is bordered by? • Mississippi is bounded by? • Absolute location- precise location on Earth, use latitude, longitude, and GPS. • What is the absolute location of Mississippi?

Mississippi’s Natural Environment Climate • Humid Subtropical: Humid through most of the year and we see quite a lot of rain • This climate affects a number of things • People’s movement- Snow birds coming south for year round activities (golf, fishing, the beach) • Warmer climate also affected the growth of cotton and turned MS into an important cotton producing state

Mississippi’s Natural Environment Temperature • Average is 62 • Lowest temp. recorded in 1966: -19 • Highest temp. recorded in 1930: 115 • January is the coldest month Precipitation • Average is 52 inches a year • Coastal counties receive more • Most rainfall occurs in the winter • Humidity- 76% on the coast, 70% northern counties

Mississippi’s Natural Environment Natural Hazards • Due to frequent weather changes • Tornadoes: spring and early summer (when warm air from south meets cool air from the north) • Over the past 50 years-MS averages 24 a year • Hurricanes: June to October • Two most powerful hurricanes in MS • Camille in 1969 • Katrina in 2005

  13. Water Resources • Surface water: MS uses it for irrigation and electric power • Major resource for the paper industry • Ground Water: By way of aquifers, it supplies water to most cities and towns

Rivers • Mississippi River: • Most of the Western border of the state • Drains the interior of the United States from the Appalachians to the Rockies • Much of it is navigable (boats) • Nine Major River Systems: • Drain into the MS River • Yazoo River • Big Black • Bayou Pierre-Coles Creek • Homochitto River • Drains South • Noxubee-Tombigbee • Pearl River • Amite River • Pascagoula River • Biloxi-Wolf-Jourdan River
