  2. Phases of Pregnancy • Germinal: up to 2 weeks, 60% death rate • Embryo: up to 8 weeks, 20% death rate • Fetus: up to birth (28 weeks), 5% death rate • 3 months, 3 ounces, 3 inches, all organs • Only 1/3 zygotes survive to birth

  3. Teratogens • Definition: substance increasing risk for prenatal abnormalities • Critical periods: time when organ or body part is most susceptible • Interaction effects • Caution is best

  4. Birth Complications • Apgar scale: 7 out of 10 is OK • Sleeper effects • Washout effects • Perinatal Anoxia • Increased inattention throughout life • Infancy: Sensory and motor difficulties • Age 3: Cognitive deficits • Age 7: Social skill deficits
