Teacher Education in CA How do I become a teacher in California? • Complete the State requirements (see Application page) • 1-2 year preparation program to obtain your preliminary credential (offered here at UCI and other institutions) • 2 years to complete an Induction Program (Beginning Teacher Support & Assessment – BTSA) to clear your credential. (Your employer will help you obtain this.) • Continuous professional development http://unex.uci.edu/certificates/education

Is There a Need for Teachers? • You’ve probably seen some of the layoffs that have occurred in the past year or so, and are wondering, “Is there going to be a job out there for me?” Here are some factors you may consider about teaching. • Retiring Teachers – many teachers born in the baby-boom era are now ready to retire. • Studies project a need for 300,000 new teachers in California in the next 10 years. • Certain fields are always in need of teachers: Math, Sciences, and Special Education • The Federal government has set Education as a priority for its budget and stimulus, promising a fruitful future. • Making yourself more marketable is also a consideration in this time. You will do this by going to a good school, and then also by adding supplementary credentials (usually by merely taking the CSET and methods course in that area!) Come to an info session for details!

Teacher’s Pay $$$ • Teacher compensation varies by district and by education and sometimes, even by subject. • Here are some examples • Irvine, 2007-2008 • $48,361 1st year teacher: Bachelors + Credential • $49,089 1st year teacher: BA, Cred., + 45 units • $65,743 10th year of teaching, BA, Cred. + 45 units • Garden Grove, 2006-2007 • $47,432 1st year teacher, Bachelors + Credential • $47,652 1st year teacher: BA, Cred., + 30 units • $71,477 10th yr of teaching, BA, Cred. + 30 units

M.A.T. – Master’s of Art in Teaching The MAT in Education is a full-time program for people seeking careers in teaching and who are interested in earning a Master’s degree and a teaching credential. Most MAT students complete the program in 15 months, two summers and an academic year. There is the option of entering the MAT Program in the summer immediately following the completion of teaching credential coursework at UCI. However, potential applicants who have competed their credential elsewhere or earlier than immediately preceding the teaching credential program will not be considered. The program of study includes six “core” MAT courses, one of the UCI teaching credential programs (single or multiple subject), and a comprehensive exam. Students participating in the Spring Start Intern Program can add the MAT following the Intern Program is completed. While the MAT Program is a full-time program, students can work in the summers, but find it more difficult to fit in part-time work during the credential program. Courses are taught by Department of Education research faculty and expert lecturers. This blend of research and practice (praxis) prepares future teachers for the academic, social, and policy challenges of teaching in today’s diverse urban and suburban classrooms How is the MAT different from the Credential? The program is two summers in addition to the credential. The MAT is a Masters of Arts in Teaching, which is an advanced degree, and increases your salary when you are hired.

M.A.T. – Master’s of Art in Teaching 1st Summer (can be before or after the credential coursework) EDUC 201: Teachers' Lives and the Policy Environment of Teaching EDUC 202: Outcomes of Schooling and Student Assessment EDUC 203: Advanced Concepts in Learning and Cognition* *EDUC 173: Cognition and Learning in Educational Settings is a pre-requisite to the first summer MAT coursework and is offered in the first summer. 2nd Summer (can be done immediately after the credential, OR after a year of teaching) EDUC 205: Critical Assessment of Teaching Practice and Learning EDUC 206: Cognition and Pedagogy in Specific School Subjects OR EDUC 207: or Cognition and Pedagogy in Quantitative Literacy EDUC 240: Instructional Design and Educational Technologies (Education 240).

  13. Spring Start Intern Program What is theSpring Start Program? The Spring Start Student Teaching and Intern Program begins in spring with intense fieldwork and student teaching and continues in the summer with courses only. Then, depending on the demonstrated level of competence and the availability of jobs, you might receive an offer for paid intern teaching. If you are successful in fieldwork but don’t receive an internship, you can student teach in the fall. For this program, the bulk of coursework is front-loaded in Spring and Summer. For further information see http://www.gse.uci.edu/AP_ITCP_Index.php. Interested in an Internship? Intern teachers are selected by partner school districts. Candidates who are selected for internships typically have these characteristics: - Previous formal teaching experience such as substitute teaching, private school, Peace Corps, adult education - Extensive informal teaching experience such as college teaching assistant, summer camp, corporate training - Strong organizational skills - Self-directedness - Motivation to succeed in a high-demand environment - Strong subject matter competence (passed CSET) If you become an intern, you will be in the program for five quarters. You will be eligible for your preliminary credential at the end of your internship.

Speak with Kookie Vu (kpvu@uci.edu) in UCI Financial Aid office The UC Irvine Financial Aid Office (http://www.ofas.uci.edu/content/) can assist you with additional information about Cal Grant and federal and university loan programs. Other important information about financing your graduate education can be found in the Office of Graduate Studies (http://www.grad.uci.edu/prospective/finance_edu.htm) Go to the library. Find The Grants Register in Langson Bound Periodicals (UCI Call number: LB 2338.G7 2008) to find grants and scholarships that may apply to you.   17. Financial Assistance (cont.) • Master's and Credential Program FUNDING options(apply online at http://www.gse.uci.edu/PS_FYE.php) • APLE (Assumption Program of Loans for Education). The APLE Commission may assume up to $11,000 in outstanding educational loans in return for four consecutive years of full time eligible teaching service in a California K-12 public school. • TEACH Grants. Up to $16,000. The goal of this scholarship program is to provide financial incentives and academic support for aspiring teachers who will teach in high-need (academically & culturally diverse) schools. Must have undergraduate GPA of 3.25+. • Delta Kappa Gamma Scholarship for Future Teachers. The Rho chapter of the Delta Kappa Gamma Society International, a society of educators throughout the United States and other countries, is vitally interested in assisting women who are pursuing a career in education by offering recruitment grants to women who both demonstrate academic promise and financial need. Awards vary up to $500 each. • California Retired Teachers Association, Laura Settle Scholarship. The Laura E. Settle Foundation awards $2,000 to a credential student that possesses an average to high scholastic standing, a record of exemplary character, and financial need. • Owen Thomas Memorial Scholarship for UCI English Undergraduates. The Owen Thomas Scholarship is awarded to honor outstanding undergraduate scholarship in English and a commitment to secondary English teaching. • Pi Lambda Theta Scholarships & Grants. An international honor society and professional association in education.   18. Certificate of Clearance (CoC) Please make obtaining the CoC a priority even prior to submitting an application. Not having the CoC in place disqualifies you from participating in any teacher education program in California. Go online to http://www.ctc.ca.gov/credentials/how-to-apply.html Print the fingerprinting (LiveScan) form (PDF file). Go to the any approved location to get your fingerprints scanned. There will be a $51 fee, plus additional service fees the vendor may apply. You may consider visiting the Orange County Department of Education, located by John Wayne Airport. Here is their website for directions http://www.ocde.k12.ca.us/. They are faster and less expensive than a police station, and will help you fill out the documents. Go back to the same website (see #1 above) and this time click on Online Direct Application Site (1c). Complete the online form and pay $29.50 application fee. Please complete the fingerprinting and online application within seven (7) days of each other. The Certificate of Clearance is searchable by the public online at: https://teachercred.ctc.ca.gov/teachers/PublicSearchProxy.
