  1. Background • SLC is one of three elements of the BER • P21 – Primary Schools for the 21st Century • NSP – National School Pride • SLC – Science and Language Centres for 21st Century Secondary Schools • SLC is the only competitive element within BER

Applications - Guidelines As the SLC element was a competitive process several tools were distributed and/or made available to EAs across all sectors to assist them with the application process: • The BER Guidelines • SLC Application Guide • SLC Program Officers to respond to enquiries • The BER website • The BER IT team available to assist with IT issues

  3. Assessment criteria In order of importance: • Demonstrated level of disadvantage • Demonstrated need for the facility • Capacity to build within the specified timeframes • Effective and efficient use of Commonwealth funding • Use of sustainable building principles

  4. Applications – Step One • EAs called for applications from all eligible schools in their sector. • EAs assessed and prioritised applications against assessment criteria. • EAs shortlisted applications and submitted their shortlists via online application process to DEEWR for consideration.

  5. Applications – Step Two • DEEWR undertook an assessment of each application against the assessment criteria. • DEEWR prioritised applications and forwarded each application to the NAP. • The NAP assessed applications against the assessment criteria. • The NAP made recommendations to the Minister.

  6. National Assessment Panel (NAP) • Convened by DEEWR and appointed by the Minister to assess applications and make funding recommendations to the Minister for Education. • Comprised experts representing the fields of: • Sciences • Languages • Associations for Parents and Citizens • State High Schools • Catholic and independent schools

  7. Successful projects • 537 new or refurbished science and language centres will be built under SLC • 280 science centres • 179 language centres • 78 dual science and language centres

Characteristics of a 21st Century Science Centre • Strong emphasis on flexibility (reconfigurable) • Facility allows for easy access to ICT resources • Wet and dry practical workspaces • Suitable display and storage areas for investigations in progress • Strong adherence to OHS requirements and ease of access to safety equipment • Space supports different learning styles (didactic, demonstration, practical, role play, ICT, group learning)

Characteristics of a 21st Century Language Learning Centre • Good acoustic design • The capacity to transform the learning space from whole group to small group and individual work spaces • Ease of access to learning resources, particularly access to portals to the wider world (for virtual visits, interaction, collaboration, research and publishing)
