Let’s Go Wild With Utah Animals !
We will study 5 groups of Animals • MAMMALS • BIRDS • REPTILES • AMPHIBIANS • FISH
Group 1: Mammals • Browsers: deer, elk, moose • Canines: wolves, coyotes, red foxes • Felines: mountain lions, bobcats • Medium: raccoons, porcupines, skunks • Rodents: pika, mice, ground squirrels, etc.
Utah Mammals~ Browsers ~ • White Tailed Deer They live in the foothills & mountains. They eat shrubs & bushes. They are eaten by big cats, wolves and man.
Interesting Facts • The babies are camouflaged with spots and they have no scent so the hunters cannot see or smell them. • Adult deer can jump over fences that are 10 feet high. • The males lose their antlers every fall. They get new ones in the spring. They get one more point on them each year.
Utah Birds Burrowing Owl • Instead of living in trees, this owl likes to dig holes and live in the ground. • It eats rodents. • It is only 6 or 7 inches tall.
Bird Facts • Birds are warm blooded • They usually build nests to lay eggs in. • Depending on the type of bird, they eat seeds, insects, worms, caterpillars, fish, rodents, snakes, lizards, dead things and flower nectar. • Utah birds live in deserts, mountains, valleys and by lakes and rivers.
Utah Reptiles They live in mountains, deserts and valleys. They eat insects, small rodents, eggs & each other. They are eaten by rats, birds, raccoons & each other.
Facts I Learned about Reptiles • They are cold blooded. That means they cannot make their own body heat. • They can grow a new tail if they lose it. • They have scaly skin. • They eat their food whole. They don’t chew it up in bites.
Utah Amphibians • They must live in the water when young. Then they grow lungs and can live on land. • They eat insects. • They are eaten by birds, fish, raccoons, and reptiles, to name a few.
Facts I Learned about Amphibians 1.They have a smooth skin. 2. They are cold-blooded like reptiles. 3. They have long tongues to catch their prey.
Utah Fish • These are pictures of the June sucker and the Cutthroat trout. • They are the only 2 native fish to Utah. All others have been brought in by men.
Facts I learned about Utah Fish • 1. Fish must live in water. Most like to hide under rocks or by water plants. • 2. They eat insects, worms, insect larvae, and smaller fish. • 3. They are eaten by bigger fish, bears, raccoons and men.
