  2. A Little About Me… • Farmville, NC • Graduated from UNCW – Go Seahawks! • Bachelor’s degree in English; Master of Arts in Teaching • Love Carolina basketball and trashy reality TV • Dog - Sadie; Cat – Dane • Scared of clowns; obsessed with celebrity gossip • studied abroad in Paris, France

  3. Class Mission A mission is something you set out to do and are determined to accomplish. My mission for all of my classes is to use all the resources available to me to create a fun, engaging, thought-provoking environment for my students.  I also will create a safe learning environment where you can feel comfortable to be yourself without judgment, where you will not only be listened to, but that your opinions and voice will be HEARD.  Most importantly, I hope that through our time spent together you will grow and learn things about yourself and your classmates that you never knew before.

  4. My Expectations of Each of You… • Why? Because I believe you can do it. • I know you are ALL smart, and never want to hear differently. • You can do anything you try. • “I can’t” is the acronym for “I Completely Admit I’m Not Trying.”

  5. Classroom Procedures • Procedures are put in place for our classroom so you will know what is expected of you on a daily basis. • In order for our class to run as efficiently as possible, we will adapt the following classroom procedures…

  6. Entering the Classroom • Enter the classroom quietly • Sit in your assigned seat (These are not negotiable.) • Read the agenda and objectives for the class period on the board. • Have all materials (notebook, paper, pen/pencil, book) ready and begin Bell Ringer Activity BEFORE the tardy bell rings.

  7. Bell Ringer Procedure • Date each entry on the right side of the paper Ex: 26 August 2013 • Copy the activity word-for-word on your paper • Draw a line underneath when completed. You will keep a running log of Bell Ringers. These will be collected every 3 weeks. • Schedule: • M.U.G. Shot Mondays (Mechanics, Usage, Grammar) • Term Tuesdays (new literary term – definition and application) • Word Wednesdays (5 new vocab words) • Thinking Thursdays (thought-provoking prompt) • Free Write Fridays (you can write on any topic you choose!)

  8. Materials Needed… • All Classes: • Flashdrive (at least 4GB) • 1” 3-ring binder with 5 dividers – The dividers should be labeled: Bell Ringers, Literature, Vocabulary, Writing/Grammar, and Research • Pen/pencil/highlighter • Loose-leaf paper • 1 pack of 3x5 (white) index cards • 1 pack of 4x6 (white) index cards • A positive attitude!

  9. Getting MY Attention… • Raise your hand • Wait until you are acknowledged before speaking • Be patient • Continue working while waiting for me to get to you.

I will collect the papers or ask one of you to collect the papers and put them in the appropriate basket. • Baskets are on the counter. These are for non-graded work. Do not place already graded assignments in the baskets. • What to do if you finish classwork early? - work on unfinished English assignments - read your “choice” novel - review vocabulary words - start working on homework

  12. Classroom Discussions • PLEASE participate. • I want to hear what you have to say. • Make all questions and comments relevant to the current discussion. • If your question is off the topic, write it down and ask later.

  13. Moving Around Room… • You must ask permission. • Do not ask during a classroom discussion unless it is an emergency. • Wait to throw away trash at the end of class.

  14. WHILE YOU WERE OUT • Students are responsible for completing all missed assignments. • Missed assignments are located in the What Did I Miss? Notebook on the front table • Make up work is to be completed within 3 days of your absence and placed in basket. • All assignments will lose 10 points per day.

  15. Bathroom Policy • Everyone receives 3 bathroom passes per six weeks. • Once the three passes have been used you may not leave class for any reason. • If you do not use any of your bathroom passes for the six weeks you will earn one extra point on your six-weeks average
