  1. Please Do Now: Why are words powerful? Give an example of a time when words made a difference in your life. What are your feelings towards poetry? Do you enjoy reading poetry? Writing poetry? Why/why not?

  2. Write and Discuss: • What are some of your most vivid family memories? Choose a memory involving someone close to you and write a brief sketch of your recollection. Include sensory details as well as events that present a clear picture of your subject.

  3. Terms to Know: • Lyric Poetry: brief poems in which the speakers share personal thoughts and feelings on a subject (usually sung) • Lyric poems have a lot in common with songs, including: • a sense of rhythm and melody • Imaginative language • the creation of a single, unified impression

  4. Terms to Know: • Imagery: the words and phrases that appeal to one or more of the five senses

  5. Your Turn: • An example of imagery describing a roller-coaster ride is ______________________________________________________________________________________________________
