  1. Do Now!(please!) • What are some behaviors that interfere with learning in your school?

  2. Ellsworth High School • Balancing Act: PBIS Implementation

  3. Background: Ellsworth High School serves approximately 600 students from 8 different elementary schools. We have a staff of about 70 (including support staff). We were identified as a Tier 1 school last spring and have since been awarded a School Improvement Grant. Last summer EHS had a turnover of almost 50% of our staff (including new administration). We are in year 2 of PBIS implementation.

Year One: • 5+ PD days focused on PBIS initiative – • 4 – school PBIS team • 1+ – whole school In-service day: district-wide introduction to PBIS Formed EHS School PBIS team as part of district initiative Four PD days for school PBIS team with consultant & curriculum coordinator School wide PD day led by school PBIS team – focus was determined by individual school needs.

  5. Year One: Team PD Topics Identify similarities between PBIS & RTI How does this apply to whole school? Tier 1 Audit – what are the behaviors that interfere with learning? What are our common behavioral expectations? Define ODR process and data collection system. Begin formation of behavioral matrix, lesson plans & reward systems. Determine major/minor offenses and discipline flow chart. Plan for staff roll-out – getting 80% buy-in.

  7. Brainstorm: • Think about your “Do Now.” Fill out the template on your table. What are some ways that your school already addresses the needs of students in all three levels based on the areas that interfere with learning? • Examples: • Tier 1: classroom systems instructional management • Student handbook • Tier 2: Check & Connect • Tutoring, credit recovery, individual course planning • Tier 3: Behavior Support Plans, Alternative Ed, community-based transition plans

Behavioral Matrix & ODR’s • How are ODR’s tracked? • Infinite Campus, Powerschool, SWIS • What defines an ODR? • Discipline ladder, Major/Minor offenses • Staff input/Student input • protocol, discussion • Share with all stakeholders (parents, board members, community) • Student handbook, website

  10. Now for the fun… Reward Systems! • Keep the 3 tier concept in mind when developing a reward system. • Tier 1: Classroom, spontaneous, easy, cheap • Tier 2: Individual, but higher profile, some planning involved • Tier 3: Whole-school, major reward system

  11. 3-Tiered Reward System Tier 1: Teacher praise, positive reinforcement, “gotcha” card given Tier 2: “gotcha” cards drawn every Friday morning during announcements (2/week) Tier 3: School wide celebration of success – activity, assembly (student council planned)

Goal Setting • Accurate data collection first! • Determine baseline. • Set measurable goal. • Start small. • Choose one area to focus on a time. • First few goals should be (easily) attainable! • Current EHS Goal: To collect accurate data that indicates an improvement in proper care and use of student issued laptops.

  15. Teaching Behaviors • Protocol for reviewing behavior matrix with students. • Lesson plans developed to address specific problem behaviors (should be tied to school PBIS goals). • Structure in place for teaching behavioral lessons. • Frequent rewards for positive behaviors.
