  1. Safety in the Kitchen

  2. GENERAL • Keep drawers and cupboard doors closed. • Wipe up spills immediately. • Use oven mitts or potholders to handle hot dishes; never use a damp dish towel or an apron. • Move in an orderly manner. Do not run in the lab.

  3. GENERAL • Avoid accidents by working in an uncluttered area: take your time and be cautious. • Have the chairs pushed under the tables. • Connect and disconnect electrical appliances by holding the plug, not the cord. • Always dry hands before handling electrical appliances.

  4. GENERAL • Use knives and all other sharp instruments correctly. • Cut away from yourself. • Carry knives with tip pointed down and laid towards leg. • Lay sharp knives, peelers, etc. carefully aside after using.

  5. USING THE STOVE & OVEN • Pull rack out when putting baking pans into the oven or checking for doneness. • Turn pot handles away from you to prevent dangerous spills. • Remove lids away from you to avoid steam burns. • Do not leave towels, papers, or other flammable items on the stovetop.

  6. USING THE STOVE & OVEN • Check to see if all elements and oven are turned off at the end of class. • Relieve minor burns by keeping the burned area under cold running water. • Be sure dishcloths, towels, clothing and electrical cords are far enough away from heating units to ensure safety from fire.

  7. WASHING DISHES • Never leave knives and sharp instruments in soapy dishwater. Wash separately, dry immediately and put away carefully. • Discard broken or chipped dishes and equipment; place in proper separate container. Pick up glass fragments with a damp towel. • Never immerse electric motors in water (e.g. Electric mixers).

  8. IN CASE OF FIRE • Note the location of fire extinguishers and fire blanket in the room. • Turn off the elements if the fire alarm sounds. • Use the following to smother fires: • GREASE FIRE use baking soda (found in your unit) or use a tight fitting lid • ELETRICAL FIRE fire extinguisher • Know and follow fire drill procedures.

  9. *** REPORT ALL ACCIDENTS IMMEDIATELY TO THE TEACHER***
