  1. How do you define flavor? Flavor is a combination of smell and taste. There are only five tastes but over a thousand aromas to smell. You get flavor when you combine aroma, texture, and taste to the mix. Nevertheless, aroma is the biggest and most important part of flavor. The other two parts make only about 10% of flavor. Spirit drinkers probably get where this discussion is leading.

  2. How do you differentiate between spirits? The difference in spirit lies more in their aroma than their taste and texture. This is the reason distillers who produce spirits focus more on the aroma. So, how is this done? Distillers go about this job by infusing/adding a flavoring, blending, changing the aging barrel or the distillation source, aging, or a combination of these things.

  3. How destructive is ethanol alcohol? Ethanol alcohol (C2H5OH) has several destructive properties out of which, being an anesthetic and a deterrent for the sense of smell are the most notable ones. These two things make it the least favorite part of the spirit drinking experience. A few strong whiffs of a 40% ABV spirit could affect the efficiency of your nose. This could take away from your sense of smell or at least make it a difficult task. To add to this, it is the lightest compound that is found in high concentration in aromas of different spirits.

  4. How ethanol alcohol and common spirit glasses make drinking spirits a nose-numbing affair? Spirits with 40% ABV alcohol will have a higher concentration of ethanol floating between a glass’s rim and its top surface. Plus, ethanol evaporates faster than any other compound present in spirits. So, when such a high percentage of ethanol rests in a glass with a small rim, the possibility of spirit drinkers being exposed to the two most devastating effects of ethanol mentioned earlier are very high. Also, they will not be able to detect the nuances of different kinds of spirits.

  5. What is the difference between convergent rim and divergent rim spirit glasses? The biggest disadvantage with convergent rim glasses is that they collect all the aroma around a small space (rim) which ensures no aromas can escape the glass. This means that spirit drinkers will have to smell all aromas present in the glass, including ethanol. On the other hand, divergent rim glasses like NEAT are strategically designed to release all the aromas, resulting in the dissipation of lighter ethanol away from the nose of the spirit drinker.
