  16. Molly Kate 4. Who thinks that the purpose of Tony’s actions was to make Claire feel good about herself. 5. Who thinks that humans will never be able to make a robot like Tony? 6. Who would really like a robot like Tony at her house?

  17. LISTENING TEXT SATISFACTION GUARANTEED Listen to Molly (M) and Kate (K) discussing the story “Satisfaction Guaranteed”.

  18. M: Don’t you think that was a great love story, Kate? K: No, not really. M: You didn’t? Well, I loved it. There was so much emotion between Tony and Claire.

  19. K: Molly, that’s rubbish. You forget that Tony was a machine. Yes, Claire fell in love with Tony, but I don’t believe robots could possibly feel emotion of any kind. That’s the difference between them and us.

  20. M: Well, I disagree. I think Tony loved Claire. Remember he said to her how he didn’t want to leave her the next day and that he felt more than just the wish to please her? K: Yes, but Molly, that was just part of Tony’s role. They made him so that he wouldn’t allow a human to be hurt.

  21. And Claire was hurting herself by seeing herself in a negative way and Tony couldn’t let her do that. So everything Tony did was to make Claire feel good about herself. It had nothing to do with emotion – that was just how he was made.

  22. M: OK, well, maybe you’re right. I suppose I just want to think he was more human than he was. Anyway, I wonder how they could actually make a robot seem as if he had emotions.

  23. K: I have no idea. Maybe Tony was just a very complicated computer. Anyway, I don’t believe it would ever be possible for humans to make a robot like Tony.

  24. M: Well, Kate, you just never know. Actually, I’d really like a robot like Tony living at my house. Imagine a handsome man whose only purpose in life was to please you! K: Mmm. Do you know what I really think, Molly? M: What?

  25. K: I think that Tony was really a man pretending to be a robot. M: Oh, Kate! K: Actually, now that I think about it, I guess that was the company’s biggest mistake.

  26. M: What? K: That they made the robot look so much like a real man. M: Yes, you’re right.

  27. Discuss Imagine having a robot in their houses to do the housework. Discuss what positive or negative effect the situation would be.

  28. Positive effects I think it is wonderful for people to have robots in their houses to do the housework. After a day’s work, when people get home, they can be really relaxed with everything prepared by their robots. A robot never gets tired. Nor does it complain. Life will be very easy and comfortable.

  29. Negative effects Maybe people can enjoy a very comfortable life with the help of their robots. But at the same time I believe people will lose the ability to do housework. As time goes by, people cannot live well without a robot’s help. I think that kind of life would be terrible.

  30. Writing Write a paragraph describing a new type of robot.

  31. A sample of a new type of robot. Remote Presence Robots

  32. Remote Presence Robots allow a medical expert to visually examine and communicate with a patient from anywhere in the world, via the machine, using wireless technology.

  33. The robot runs on a wireless system with the doctor at another location. It is controlled via a secure broadband internet connection. The doctor (controller) and patient are able to have a real-time two-way audiovisual interaction, with the

  34. controller in full command of the robots movements, head monitor and camera. The doctor ‘driving’ the robot can view the patient, ask questions and read patient records, view X-rays and test results from the console. The patient sees the doctor’s image on the robots ‘face’.

  35. Although the robot does not physically examine the patient it allows face-to-face contact between the doctor and patient, providing immediate access to specialists. Our robots certainly would never

  36. replace all doctors on ward rounds, but they are a communication tool which allows a doctor to have direct contact with their patient if they are unable to get to them. And this may be a significant step for patient care.

  37. Homework Write a paragraph describing the robot and what it can do. 未来的保姆 可以更准确地识别出讲话者的方位,并能在噪音中识别语音,可识别手写体文字,为增强与机器人之间的合作等功能提高了通信能力。由于儿童不可能像大人一
