  1. Native Americans The first people to inhabit North and South America came from Asia.

Vocabulary • migrate: to move from one place to another • archaeologist: studies ancient people by analysis of their artifacts • Ice Age: approximately 8,000 years ago • culture: skills, customs, art, etc. of a given people during a certain period • civilization: an advanced state of society, in which high level of culture and science has been reached

  3. During the Ice Age, Native Americans followed animals from Asia to the New World • Ice sheets caused the level of the oceans to drop. • Bering Strait • Searching for food • Over thousands of years, groups moved south to the tip of South America • The Mayas, the Aztecs, and the Incas had highly advanced cultures

  4. By 1492, there were hundreds of tribes in North America • Each tribe had a different name and different customs • Six major groups or culture areas • Far North • Eastern Woodlands • Plains • Southwest • California-Intermountain • Northwest Coast

  5. Geographical features determined way of life • Far North – nomads due to short growing season • Eastern Woodland – farmers and hunters • Plains – nomads who followed buffalo • Southwest – farmers • California-Intermountain - hunter-gatherers • Northwest Coast – abundant resources, ruled by a few families chosen because of wealth and ancestry
