  3. What is a Storyboard Austin Powers The X-Files A storyboard is a drown out version of each of the shots that you plan on filming in your film (opening sequence Very important and still used by major film studios to date It is made up of a number of squares with illustrations or pictures representing each shot with notes about what is going on in each scene and what is being said in the script Spider Man 3 The Dark Knight Rises

  4. What is included in a storyboard

  5. What’s on a Storyboard Shot Number Location ACTION So you know exactly what shot you are working on and the order it goes in You don’t have to draw every single location you can state whether it is inside or outside. Allows you to identify all the locations It is a description of what happens so you don’t have to draw in movement or draw loads of different shots e.g. guy picks up the gun close up so everyone knows what happening in that shot Lighting Sound Shot/Movement Isn't the easiest thing to draw so you can state what lightning you know you will need like bright light shines on object What dialogue is there or if there is any, point out any particular sounds u need Visually we can see if it is a close up or not but it shows us if there is any movement or does the shot change

  6. Whats on a storyboard Transitions Timing Most of the shots are going to be cuts but if you want transitions like fade out of a fade to or even a crossdissolve. Makes you think about shot followed by next shot how are they going to match up How long is that shot going to last for 10 to 40 seconds however long.

  7. Before Filming Why is storyboarding important It is invaluable Having a storyboard drawn/sketched out helps you plan and organize your scene before you film to get an idea of : - What shots you need - What props you need - What order things are going to be in Storyboard help you to consider how you might film each moment Most of the time you have a script/screenplay to base your storyboard of- helps turn into the visual version of the script which helps you see what the film will look like visually- helps bring the group together as you all see what the idea your trying to convey will look like - shows you what works well -what you need to change It allows you to think about what shots to use like closeups, pan, tilt or long shot

  8. Before Filming • It is useful to storyboard as when your on set for a film e.g. wonder women you have hundreds of extras, loads of different functions happening, maybes rented different locations to film (certain amount of time) or a complicated set • When your on set time is valuable, the longer you take to do one shot the less time you have on the other ones and in filming time is money so the longer you are on set the more money it is going to cost you • Storyboard helps you get these shots done efficiently as you know what you need to film so it helps the limited time you have- you do some improvisation of shots but most of it will be planned • Help you to think about editing- rather than having them as separate moments you can edit them together • Some of the best filmmakers and editors are aware of editing the whole way through there plan e.g. close up of a man to jump cut to a closeup of the other man to show juxtaposition • Not only about planning time it is to see what works and what doesn’t and trying new techniques and ideas out before the day

  9. Why is storyboarding important After Filming • Storyboard is still important after you film • For the editor who usually isn’t on set the story board help them to visualise see what is going and what follows what so you get a visual layout • The editor transfers the storyboard form the real shots to make the sequence • Helps to organize before but also helps the editor to see the pace and what goes through
