  5. HEMINGWAY • A lot of what Hemingway writes about is derived from his personal life. For instance, The Old Man and the Sea is based in Cuba where Hemingway lived for a part of his life. Also, the characters in the book were based on some of his childhood friends. His war novels obviously reflect on his time spent with the American Red Cross working as a WWI ambulance driver. Many of his main characters depict, ”grace under pressure” Him and several other authors who resided in Europe during his time are considered to be “The Lost Generation”.

  6. Unity, heroism, manhood, pride, success, and worthiness are all part of a journey that The Old Man and the Sea will take the reader on. THE OLD MAN AND THE SEA IS A GREAT NOVEL BECAUSE OF ITS TWO MAIN CHARACTERS, ITS THEMES, AND ITS MANY SYMBOLS. THESIS STATEMENT/ATTENTION GETTER

  7. BLUEPRINTS • BLUEPRINT I- Main characters. States the relationship between the protagonists. Describes the protagonists. • BLUEPRINT II- Themes. There are numerous themes throughout the novel. This blueprint broke them down and explained where they came from. • BLUEPRINT III- Symbols. The novel is much easier read if one knows the symbolism of certain objects mentioned. The blueprint explained them.

  8. MAIN CHARACTERS

  9. SANTIAGO

  10. Santiago is the protagonist of the novel. His only friend is the young boy Manolin who is the other main character. The relationship between these two began when Manolin helped the old man fish. He is a Cuban fisherman who hasn’t caught a fish for 84 days. All the other fishermen make fun of him for his bad luck but nevertheless he stays determined. He is very strong in both body and mind and overcomes his adversaries.

  11. MANOLIN

  12. Manolin is a young boy who is the only friend of Santiago. He used to fish with the old man until his father made him quit because of Santiago’s “bad-luck”. He first began fishing with the old man when he was 5 years old. Although he no longer fishes with the old man he stays very much connected with the old man. It is he who gives the old man strength o carry on whilst at sea.

  13. PLOT SUMMARY • Santiago hasn’t caught a fish for 84 days straight. • Santiago decides that the 85th day is going to be his day. He sails far out into the middle of the ocean and sets up shop. • He drops his lines and at about noon time he hooks a marlin which begins to pull his skiff. • He wouldn’t tie the line to the boat for he feared the fish would pull him under so he just held on tight. • The marlin pulls the boat for a good two days until it finally gets tired. • Santiago repeatedly thinks about his friend Manolin to give him strength to succeed. • Finally he lands the fish which took him approximately 3 days to catch. • On the way back a Mako shark bites the fish causing it to bleed. • Santiago, upset at this, shoots the shark. • After all that the Shark died but took with him a chunk of the marlin, a lot of string, and some of Santiago’s pride. • The bleeding attracts other sharks to Santiago’s catch.

  14. PLOT SUMMARY • The sharks feast on the marlin and tear away at the flesh. • Santiago wards them off best he can but more and more appear. • By time night falls nothing remains of the fish but the skeleton. • Santiago returns back home and wanders back to his shack and falls asleep. • A group of fishermen see the skeleton but don’t know what to make of it. • They mistake it for a shark skeleton. • The old man and Manolin agree to work together again. • Then life returns to normal.
