The brightest jewel
  • For many years India was seen as the brightest jewel in the crown of Queen Victoria.
  • India was the key to great wealth in the business world.
  • While India was valuable to the British for its resources.
  • They placed less value on its social institutions.

  • This was especially true of the system of government.
  • When the British first arrived in India the British East India Company was kept under control by the ruling MugalDynasty.
  • By 1700 the Mugal Dynasty was failing and the British East India Company was the leading power in India.

  • A Muslim dynasty that ruled most of northern India from the early 16th to the mid-18th century
  • It continued to exist as a reduced powerless entity until the mid-19th century.

  • The British rule was supported by several maharajahs
  • These were Indian Princes who ruled small sections of the nation
  • They were the equivalent of the nobles in France

  • The company even had its own private army
  • The army was trained and led by British officers but the soldiers were Indians
    • They were known as Sepoys
  • The soldiers were highly trained and effective

  • The Sepoys were not loyal to Britain however
  • The rebellion was sparked by the fact that the British used animal fat to seal their rifle cartridges
  • This was a major problem because the Indians were either Hindus or Muslims

  • The rebellion started in Meerut but soon spread to Delhi
  • Soon all of the Sepoys were rebelling against the British rule in India
  • The British were forced to send troops to India to restore their control
  • It took over a year for the British East India Company to return to power in India

  • After the rebellion Britain seized direct control of India
  • India was then ruled from London as opposed to being ruled by local officials
  • The maharajas were rewarded by remaining independent
  • The rest of India became knows as the rah
  • The British instituted a policy of industrialization

  • They build railways and strengthened the economy
  • However many of the benefits of the industrialization did not go to the Indians but to the British
  • The Indian began to resent European rule but the British only tightened their hold by moving into Burma and Afghanistan
