  2. STRING FAMILY • All these instruments have stings. • Some strings are made of silk, nylon, or steel • Plucked instruments include: • Guitar • Harp • Mandolin • Banjo • String instrument played with a Bow include • Violin • Viola • Cello • Double Bass

  4. WOODWIND FAMILY • All instruments require wind to create a sound. • Flute/Piccolo are the only woodwind instruments that do not need a reed. • Reed Instruments include: • Clarinet • Saxophone • Double Reed Instruments include: • Bassoon • Oboe

  6. BRASS FAMILY • All instruments are made of Metal • All use a cup like mouth piece • Vibrations and Air help make the sounds • Trombone is the only brass instrument without valves • Upper Brass include: • Trumpet • French Horn • Lower Brass include: • Tuba/Sousaphone • Euphonium • Trombone

PERCUSSION INSTRUMENTS • All percussion instruments require movement or striking • Piano is often mistaken as a string instrument but it is a percussion. • Percussion instruments have definite (specific notes) or indefinite pitch (non-specific notes) • Definite Pitch Instruments include: • Hand Bells • Marimba • Piano • Xylophone • Indefinite Pitch Instruments include: • Drums • Maracas • Triangle • Tambourine
