  1. Monitoring and Modelling the Spanish Coastal Waters. A new concept: The Operational PdE PORTUS System Workshop on “The status of coastal observing and forecasting system”. Mallorca, October 2007

  2. Outline…. • The Área de Medio Físico (PdE) • Real-time Ocean Monitoring • Forecasting Systems • Marine database & web services • The PORTUS system

  3. Who are we? • Puertos del Estado • Área de Medio Físico(R&D Section) Main objective: To provide the required oceanographical & meteorological information need to support and to manage the Spanish harbours activities.

  4. Who are we? • Área de Medio Físico: Present Activities • Permanent measuring networks • Forecasting systems (numerical modelling) • Multi-parameter Marine Database • Web display services • R&D Projects

  5. Permanent Real-time monitoring • Deep water Buoy Network • Coastal Buoy Network • Tide-gauge Network

  6. Deep water buoy Network • 16 Buoy stations • Depths between 200 and 800m • Measured parameters: directional waves, meteorology, surface currents, temperature and salinity • Satellite Data transmission • Data from early 90’s

  7. Coastal buoy Network • 21 Buoy stations • Moored near to the coast (harbour and coastal activities) • Measured parameters: scalar & directional waves. Tryaxys stations also SST • First mooring from 1982 • Real-time radio transmission

  8. REDMAR Tide-Gauge Network • 33 measuring sites located at harbours • REDMAR network launched at 1992 • Measured parameters: sea level (new radar equipments also provide agitation data) • Real-time transmission

  9. Real-time monitoring: Some figures … PdE Real-time Measuring Networks: • Operative Equipments: 69 • Measuring devices: 203 • Records (real time QC, analyzed & displayed) per year: 11.571.960!!!

  10. Current meter Network • 3 stations (complementing the deep water buoy network) • Measured parameters: currents, temperature & salinity at different depths • No real-time transmission available

  11. PdE Monitoring Service: The future • Upgrade existing networks • Increase number of stations (remarkable: tide-gauges case) • Upgrade measuring devices • Increase sampling frequency • New networks: Incorporation of new technologies (i.e. HF Radar)

  12. Forecasting Systems Forecasting Systems Regional scale Local scale (Harbour Applications) waves • Main Aim: To provide oceanographic prediction (harbours) Waves & Agitation 5 Km 30m 30m Sea level Harbour Circulation Circulation

  13. Real Time Verification 10’- 5’ 1º - 0.25º Nesting Applications: 5’, 2.5’ & 1’ Wave Forecasting • WAM Model (INM Met forcing (HIRLAM)) • Forecast horizon: +72h. Twice a day • Variable grid spacing (2-way nesting)

  14. SAPO Systems: waves at harbours • Wave forecasting at harbours, SWAM applications nested into the regional PdE/INM wave forecasting system • Harbour agitation forecast available • Warning system

  15. Real-Time Verification Sea level Forecasting: NIVMAR • HAMSOM Model (INM Met forcing (HIRLAM)) • Forecast horizon: +72h. Twice a day • Data Assimilation (tide gauge measurements) • Web Tool for Astronomical Tide Prediction

  16. ESEOAT ESEOMED ESEOCAN Ocean Forecasting • The ESEOO Forecast System provides prediction of: • Currents • Temperature • Salinity • The sistem is operationally running on daily basis • forecast horizon: 72h • 3 regional application cover the whole Spanish waters: • ESEOAT • ESEOMED • ESEOCAN • ESEOMED application developed by IMEDEA Numerical models: POLCOMS (ESEOAT&ESEOCAN) DIECAST (ESEOMED) Resolution: 1/20º / 34 levels Forcings: INM + (FOAM+MFS)

  17. Ocean Forecasting http://www.eseoo.org ESEOAT ESEOMED ESEOCAN Products: Dayly means (3D fields) T,S & Currents Hourly values (only single level) surface currents, salinity, SST, SSH

  18. CST_BCN (200m) PRT_BCN (30m) SHE_CAT (1Km) PRT_TRG (30m) CST_TRG (200m) Harbour Circulation Systems • System currently under development for the harbours of : • Barcelona & Tarragona (Med Sea) • Bilbao (Atlantic side) Regional Scale (ESEOMED, 5km)

  19. Marine Database • Organize & store information from: • PdE monitoring and forecasting services • Long-term model hindcast • Measurements provided by other institutions • On-line access to derived products & statistics • Statistical & climatological information • Extreme wind & waves analysis • Access to raw data under request

  20. Marine Database • Example: WAVES • Data Series • Histograma • Height-period Tables • Max heights • Waves roses • Directional statistics • Mean regim & extremal analysis (return periods)

  21. Web Display Service http://www.puertos.es

  22. Users (Database & Web Services) • Through internet • Real-time monitoring data (~ 6000/day) • Marine database (~ 200/day) • Sea level forecasting (~ 500/day) • Wave forecasting (~ 15000/day) • Access to raw data (under request) • Research, engineering, technology development … (~ 300/year)

  23. The PORTUS System • New concept!!! • Enhanced interface to favour the integration of the very diverse available information • Real-time • Analyzed & historical • Forecasting • First and principal end-user: Harbour Authorities • Each harbour have a single entry point to access the available environmental information required by its particular interests and needs • Added value products (i.e. met-ocean state alert system) will be developed • PORTUS system ready to be expanded in order to provide tailored products to different user sectors (fisheries, tourism, research…)

  24. The PORTUS System • A very preliminary view of the PORTUS interface In construction

  25. Conclusions • The Área de Medio Físico of PdE provides a sustained presence in the coastal ocean emphasizing its primary interest on harbors as main end-user, but never forgetting the remarkable service that marine information available can have for science, education, technology development, and decision making • The Área serves as a national public resource for ocean monitoring and forecasting • Through national & international collaboration we can bring many local and regional efforts together to address global concerns

  26. Who’s who • Área de Medio Físico: The Team • Permanent staff: 9 people • 2 PhD & 5 MSc • Temporary staff: 3 people • 1 PhD & 2 PhD students (linked to R&D Projects)
