  2. Nonverbal Communication • “Actions speak louder than words” • 60 – 80% of face to face communication is nonverbal • Def.- bodily actions and vocal qualities that typically accompany a verbal message

  3. Characteristics • Nonverbal comm. Can be intentional or unintentional • Meaning of nonverbals is frequently ambiguous

  4. Functions • To provide information • To regulate interaction • To express or hide emotion • To present an image • To express power or control

  5. Body Motions • Kinesics- the technical name for the study of body motions in communication • Eye Contact • Facial Expressions • Emoticons • Gestures • Posture • Touch (haptics)

  6. Paralanguage • Vocalics- The sound of what we hear, how it is said. • Vocal characteristics- pitch, volume, rate, quality • Vocal Interferences- uh, um, well, like, you know?

  7. Space • Proxemics- The study of informal space. • Where would you live and why? (house, apartment, etc.) • Hall’s zones- Intimate, personal, social, public

  8. Self-Presentation • Physical Appearance • Time • Clothing • Poise
