  1. Pollination issues in Ghana- a special reference on cocoa by Eric A. Frimpong University of Cape Coast, Cape Coast, Ghana

  2. Pollination studies on some important crops/plants in Ghana • Crops:cashew, oil palm, egg plant, cow pea, groundnut, mango • Horticultural plants/shrubs:Sunflower, Cassia, Lantana, Allamanda Orange Coconut Cashew

  3. Cocoa Pollination B. Midge C. Heap of pod husks A. Bud/Flower D. Pod husk containing water H. Some finished products •Farm E. Healthy pods G. Pod with beans F. Infested pods

  4. Issues of cocoa pollination • Most studies in 1950s – 1970s • Farmers are ignorant of the identity of cocoa pollinators • Insecticide application at period of low midge population • Limited and inefficient monitoring methods of cocoa pollinators • Lack of taxonomic services

  5. Why limited pollination studies in Ghana? • Over emphasis on insect pests • Non systematic dissemination of pollination information to farmers • Neglect of pollinators in biodiversity conservation • Lack of interest among biologists • Neglect of aesthetic value of insects

  6. Proposed remedies • Research should also be focused on pollination • Pollination must be integrated into agric extension protocols • Dissemination of pollination information through electronic media, farmer field schools etc. • Interest generation among upcoming biologists
