Create an interactive Educreations Presentation identifying the characteristics of living things: responding to stimuli, using chemical energy, growth and development, reproduction, and made up of cells. Organize living and non-living items, and create a mnemonic device. Flip the classroom by presenting your creation to classmates.

Opening Questions • What is your criteria for something to be alive? • Give me one example of something that is alive. • Give me one example of something that is not alive.
Objective: I will be able to identify the characteristics of living things as evidenced by creating an Educreations Presentation Characteristics of Living Things 9-6 or 9-7
1. Respond to Stimulus • Stimulus – something that causes a response • Example: • When you go outside after being in a dark movie theater you squint your eyes
2. Use Chemical Energy • Chemical Energy- energy from food • Energy – the ability to cause change or do work • There are different kinds, all interchangeable
3. Grow and Develop • Growth- an increase in size, mass or number of cells • Development- Looks different than it did when it was a baby or old
4. Reproduce • Reproduction – the process of making more of the same kind of organism • Without it life would die
5. Made up of Cells • Cell – the smallest/basic unit of life • Even organisms that are super small are made out of cells (ex: yeast)
40# T-Chart Organize the following items into a t-chart of living things and non-living things: Ant glass Bird Elephant Rock Soda Shark Plant Table Hair Fire Telephone
A Mnemoric device for the 5 characteristic of living things • Cells, • Energy, • Respond(stimulus) • Grow/develop • Reproduce. • Your turn to create a mnemoric device Example: CERGR: Cats eat really gross rats.
Flip The Classroom! • You will become the teacher • You will make a “Characteristic of Living Things” presentation • You will use your iPad and create a presentation using Educreations • This presentation will be presented to your classmates so we better understand each characteristic of living things
Things to include in Presentation:(Each .5 POINT) ___Title and Author’s name (1point) For each characteristics include: ___Picture, Text & Audio (1.5points) ___ Create a mnemonic device for the 5 characteristics- text, picture & audio (1.5points)
Exit Questions • What are the 5 characteristics of living organisms?
