  2. Why? Writing equips the mind to think. Writing is how students engage the gears in their knowledge.

  3. Writing for Reading Comprehension I. The Outline Classic outline form: No (or few) complete sentences At least two items for each heading Why? The process of outlining clarifies main ideas and supportive details Most textbook information is created from an outline

  6. Summary Writing: • The ABOUT, AND technique: It’s ABOUT….. (one or two words) It’s about birds AND… It’s about birds and… WHO, WHAT, WHEN, WHERE, WHY, HOW…. It’s about birds and how they fly.

  8. Paraphrases: Text I: The Industrial Revolution and its inventions brought many changes to the daily lives of European families. . Text II: The goddess Eos received her title by being the Sun’s daughter. Text III: England is a majestic, scepter’s isle that is the throne of kings. It is like a fortress that Nature has built… Text IV: Governments need revenues for their activities. These revenues are raised in the form taxes paid by citizens. Text V: Because geographers want to know why something happens to the land, they focus on cause and effect relationships.

  9. Summaries: Text I: It’s about the Industrial Revolution and how it changed family life. Text II: It’s about Eos and Tithonius and how their ill-fated love story played out. Text III: It’s about England and why it is to be treasured. Text IV: It’s about the different kinds of taxes and what they are used for. Text V: It’s about cause and effect relationships and how you can recognize which is which.
