  2. Culture- the way of life of a group of people • Assimilate- becoming part of a culture • Education: • Most states require school attendance • Progressive education- goal to shape students • John Dewey- relate learning to student interests, problems and concerns

Higher Education • Expansion of colleges and univ. • Morrill Act- (money) gives states federal land that can be sold to raise $$ for education Land- grant colleges • Women: # in college grows! 40% of college students =women • Minorities: some colleges open to educate minorities • Booker T. Washington- African American educator; opens Tuskegee Institute • George Washington Carver- faculty @ Tuskegee dvlps. Hundreds of uses for peanuts and developed products such as plastic

Native Americans- schools set up on reservations see pic pg. 600 - ASSIMILATION! • Reading: • Andrew Carnegie- sets up libraries • Newspapers: Joseph Pulitzer & William Hearst • Yellow journalism- sensational reporting • Literature: • Realism: describes real life! • Regionalism: focuses on an area of the country
