What is Linking? • Linking is when the end of one word is connected or linked with the beginning of another word, creating a new or combined word. • Linking is when words are connected. • Example • Did you know she left already? → Did-ja • Would you help us please? → Would-ja • Don’t you want to come with us?→ Don-cha

  3. Would you Rather? • Review, what does opinion mean? • Opinion means a personal view that you hold for yourself. It is your own notion, idea, or impression. • What does the word agree mean? • Agree means to have the same views, thoughts, or ideas with others. • What does the word disagree mean? • Disagree mean to have different views, thoughts, or ideas with others. Can hold an opposite view. • Activity • Would you rather game on Power Point

Choices • You always have a choice to agree, disagree, or concede. • Agree is to share the same views • Disagree is to not share the same views • What do you think concede means? • Concede means to acknowledge something as true or admit someone is right. • Concede is to admit that someone with different views are correct.

  5. Conceding Phrases • I want you to use these phrases next week. • You may be right about that. • You may have something there. • You may have a point. • That’s true, but on the other hand…

  6. Agreeing Phrases • I want you to use these phrases next week. • Exactly! • Definitely! • I completely agree. • You’re absolutely right! • “You hit the nail on the head.”

  7. Disagreeing Phrases • I want you to use these phrases next week. • I know what you mean, but… • I’m not sure I agree with you. • I hate to disagree with you but… • Some people say…but… • A lot of people think…but in reality… • I can see your point, but I don't really agree with it. • That’s more or less true, but…

Agreeing, Disagreeing or Conceding • Which is it? • You’re absolutely right! • Agreeing • I know what you mean, but… • Disagreeing • You may have a point. • Conceding • That’s true, but on the other hand… • Conceding, disagreeing • Activity: • Turn to page 37 in your Speaking Beautiful English books. • Are the phrases agreeing, disagreeing, or conceding?

Environment Debate • Divide the class into Pro and Con • Pro is the agreeing view and Con is the disagreeing view. • Debate Question: Should people be fined for littering? • You will defend your view. What is defending? • Defending is when you try to prove something to be correct. • Have five minutes to look it over the research papers to defend their given view. • Choose speakers from each group to speak for 45 seconds defending their view. Speak loudly and clearly. Be sure you are using their phrases on agreeing, disagreeing, and conceding.

Homework: Doing your own Debate • Next week you will be doing your own debates. • Divide class into three different groups. • Divide those groups in half into Pro and Con groups. • Give the students their debate topics. • Research your topic for the next class. • Each person in your group will defend your topic for 45 seconds • Use the phrases we learned about agreeing, disagreeing, and conceding • There will be a leader in each group who will choose who will go next • You can find information about the homework posted on siaskayla.weebly.com

Homework will be graded on… • Viewpoint • Viewpoints are clear and organized. • Use of facts and examples • Arguments are supported with facts and examples. • Relevance of supporting arguments • All supporting arguments are relevant. • Strength of arguments • All arguments are strong and convincing. • Speaking voice • Voice can always be heard. • Preparation • Student is well prepared.
