  2. LAW III - Number of Players (1997) (1) A match shall be played by two teams, each consisting of not more than eleven players, one of whom shall be the goalkeeper. LAW 3 – The Number of Players (1997/1998) A match is played by two teams, each consisting of not more than eleven players, one of whom is the goalkeeper. A match may not start if either team consists of fewer than seven players.

  3. GAME SCENARIO “A” During play, the goalkeeper for the Red team, who is angry and frustrated with his teammates and coach, storms out of the game and off the field and completely leaves the area. What should the referee do?

GAME SCENARIO “A” - #1 While the Red team is now playing short-handed and without a GK, it also has control of the ball and is mounting an attack near the Blue team’s Penalty Area. b) While the Red team is now playing short-handed and without a GK, the Blue team has gained control of the ball and is beginning a counterattack near midfield.

While the Blue team begins its attack, Red #15, a substitute on the bench, runs onto the field and into the game, bringing the Red team up to 11 players, but still without a GK.

GAME SCENARIO “A” - #5 While the Red team is now playing short-handed and without a GK, the Blue team has gained control of the ball and is beginning a counterattack near midfield. f) While the Blue team begins its attack, the Red coach gives Red #7, who is a substitute on the bench, a goalkeeper’s jersey and pushes him onto the field and into the game, thus bringing the Red team up to 11 players and with an apparent GK.
