  1. Bell Ringer-Recap Yesterday: On a piece of paper, fill in the missing information in each of the following tables: Look through sections 2 and 3, Ch. 13.

Populism: • Movement to increase farmers political power and to work for legislation to their interest. • Farmers in an economic crisis • New Technology= more crop production= but lower prices • High tariffs= hard to sell products abroad • Felt victimized by Banks they received loans from and railroad that set high shipping rates • Deflation of money (value increase)=decrease in prices-> lacked currency= farmers ask congress to make more “greenbacks”

  4. Populism: • Grangers: • Oliver H. Kelley founded first national farm organization: the Patrons of Husbandry, or the Grange. • First met for educational and social purposes • Recession of 1873 (pg 470-472) • Strategies failed to help farmers-> farmers start leaving for other organizations • Farmers Alliance: Tried to help farmers by forming large cooperatives to force prices up and to make low-interest loans to farmers

  5. Populism: • People’s party: The populists • Populist James B. Weaver runs for president in 1892-> looses to Democrat Grover Cleveland • Ran on: • 8 hour work day/ immigration restrictions • Coining Silver • Fixing Rural issues • Federal ownership of railroads • Graduated income tax- taxes higher earnings more heavily

  9. “Resistance and Repression” • Many African Americans fled the South, but some stayed and joined the Populist Part • After Civil War= sharecropping leaves farmers in chronic debt-> leave farming to seek jobs in southern towns or to claim homesteads in the west. • Exodusters head to Kansas • Joining the Colored Farmers’ National Alliance-> eventually joining newly formed Populist Party • Populist Party scared southern democrats-
