  1. Directions • COME IN QUIETLY, GET OUT LAPTOPS AND BOOK, BAGS ON FLOOR • SUBMIT YOUR HOMEWORK TO TURNITIN.COM • OPEN A NEW WORD DOC FOR LENTEN REFLECTION • BE READY FOR PRAYER

  2. The Lord’s Prayer Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth, as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us, and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

  3. Anointing the Sick and matrimony Sacraments for healing and love

  4. Anointing the sick • Its purpose is to give special grace to Christians who are suffering a serious illness or old age • Help to heal the person or help them accept God’s will and die a good death • As a result of original sin man must face sickness and eventually death • Acceptance of ones sickness means that we are carrying our cross and for some repentance will only come from suffering

  5. History • Jesus invited his disciples into his healing ministry • Mark 6:13 – Jesus sent the 12 on a mission “they cast out many demons, and anointed with oil many who were sick and cured them.” • After his resurrection, Jesus says that those who believe in him “will lay their hand on the sick and they will recover”. Mark 16:18 • About the 9th century it was used for to prepare people for death • Called Extreme Unction or last anointing –combined with confession and Eucharist to prepare a person for death • 2nd Vatican change it back to a healing sacrament • Today still used for preparing a person for death, but it is mainly used for those suffering serious illness or disease.

  6. Jesus curing people in the bible • Mark 1:30-31 Now Simon’s mother-in-law lay sick with fever, and they told him of her. And he came and took her by the hand and lifted her up , and the fever left her; and she served them • Luke 14:1-6 One Sabbath when he went to dinner at the house of a rule… there was man who had dropsy. Jesus spoke ... “Is it lawful to heal on the Sabbath or not?” But they were silent. He took him and healed him and let him go. He said to them “Which of you having an ass or ox fallen in a well , will not immediately pull him out on a Sabbath day?”

  7. Celebrating the sacrament • Priest or Bishop uses oil of the sick to anoint the sick person on the forehead and hands • Says the following prayer: “Through this holy anointing,by his most loving mercy, may the Lord assist you by the grace of the Holy Spirit so that freed from your sins, he may save you and raise you up.” • The sick may also receive Sacrament of Penance and Eucharist – Confession should be first, followed by the Anointing and the Eucharist • It may be received many times in ones life, but if death is near, it should not be delayed

  8. Effects on a person • Union of the sick to the Passion of Christ • Strength, peace and courage to endure the sufferings • Forgiveness of sins and penalty of sin if unable to receive Penance • Restoration of sanctifying grace if sorrow for mortal sin is present • Restoration of health if it is good for the salvation of the soul • Preparation for passage to eternal life • Reduction or removal of all earthly punishment due to sin

  9. When should it occur • Is this a life-threatening or grave disease? • Is the person about to under go surgery for a serious illness? • Is the person of advanced age? • Has a fatal illness become more serious?

  10. “The Lord God said: ‘It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make a helper as his partner.” Genesis 2:18 The Sacrament of Matrimony

  11. Marriage in the bible • God create the two sexes so that they compliment each other and could form a natural union in which love might be shared • God wants the union to lead to new life • “Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth and subdue it.” Genesis 1:28 • Marriage is part of God’s plan, some form of marriage exists in all culture. • New Testament also contains a positive attitude about marriage. • Jesus’ first miracle was at the wedding feast

  12. The same power that unites Christ and the Church also unites wife and husband • Saint Paul in his Letters to the Ephesians 5:25-32 • Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her … In the same way, husbands should love their wives as they do their own bodies … For no one ever hates his own body, but nourishes and tenderly cares for it, just as Christ does for the church, because we are members of his body. … This is a great mystery, and I am applying it to Christ and the church. • The bible teaches us that the Sacrament of Matrimony represent the union of Christ and the Church and the permanent nature symbolizes God’s unending love for all humanity.

  13. Meaning of married love • Intended to bring unity between spouses – no matter what happens they will always love and cherish each other • It is meant to be indissoluble – committed to each other until “death do us part” • Intended to create new life • Children are part of God’s plan; married couples must be open to having children • If they are not blessed with children, God will make them fruitful in other ways • If refuse to have children, they are rejecting God’s supreme gift

  14. Sins against marriage • Adultery – voluntary sexual act with a person other than your spouse • Polygamy – more than one spouse • Divorcing your lawful spouse and marrying another is a sin against the permanence of marriage • Can not in good conscience receive communion, but can come and participate in the Mass and Church life • Annulment is special decree granted by Church after a “judge’ reviews circumstances • Recipient can receive communion • Artificial conception is a sin against creating new life
