  1. Walking in Wisdom

  2. Session Six

  3. Proverbs 2:12 refers to being delivered from “perverse things.”

  4. Proverbs 2:12 refers to being delivered from “perverse things.” What is perverse communication?

  5. The Hebrew word refers to more than what our modern minds often think of more immediately, namely, sexual perversion, rather, it has in view one who is fraudulent, deceptive, manipulative and often employing plausible deniability.

  6. Plausible deniability – speaking is such as way as to intimate thoroughness and clarity in speech and meaning but in reality, structuring statements so that one may backtrack and deny what is somewhat clear to most with regard to intention of one’s words thus, only providing a façade of integrity and depth of words for immature and shallow minds which are prone to be inattentive to details and enamored with immediate impressions.

  7. And what does the text say in Proverbs 12 a few verses earlier, as the thing which will guard a person, a couple, a family, a church and other relationships and so on, from such people?

  8. What does the text say in Proverbs 12 a few verses earlier, as the thing which will guard a person, a couple, a family, a church and other relationships and so on, from such people? Discretion

  9. 7 He stores up sound wisdom for the upright; He is a shield to those who walk in integrity, 8 Guarding the paths of justice,            And He preserves the way of His godly ones. 9 Then you will discern righteousness and justice            And equity and every good course. 10 For wisdom will enter your heart            And knowledge will be pleasant to your soul; 11 Discretion will guard you,            Understanding will watch over you,

  10. Discretion – the word in Hebrew for discretion refers to the result of complex thinking and in this case, it is the product of layered, matured and/or multi-faceted thinking of the Word of God.

  11. Often taught in this class and observed here, discretion is not the product of pointing to the Bible and saying, “show me where in the Bible it says that.” While this is a valid expectation on some matters, often it is not because this is only an elementary approach for the most basic of inquiries with regard to what God wants for our lives. Discretion is the result of compounded doctrinal thinking in application for our decision making.

  12. Let’s look at the path to discretion:

  13. 7 He stores up sound wisdom for the upright; He is a shield to those who walk in integrity, 8 Guarding the paths of justice,            And He preserves the way of His godly ones. 9 Then you will discern righteousness and justice            And equity and every good course. 10 For wisdom will enter your heart            And knowledge will be pleasant to your soul; 11 Discretion will guard you,            Understanding will watch over you,

  14. In light of Proverbs 12:18 which states: There is (he) that speaketh like the piercings of a sword: but the tongue of the wise is health. And Proverbs 27:6: Faithful are the wounds of a friend; but the kisses of an enemy are deceitful. What are ways in which we give unrighteous and righteous wounds in our speech?

  15. What is edifying speech as opposed to flattery?

  16. What is the problem with beginning a statement with the following? - Some people have complained about…
