Rationale • Developing ‘talent’ is a key aspect of the Scottish Government’s Strategy for the Creative Industries (2011) • Scotland’s screen industries are strategically important in terms of economic benefits and cultural impact • Key problem in ‘retaining and sustaining talent once it has been trained and developed’ (Creative Skillset 2013) • ‘Creativity’ and ‘talent’ central to unlocking economic success within the creative industries • Do current definitions and understandings of ‘talent’ reflect the reality and complexities of a changing industry?

Workshop One (March 2014, Glasgow) ‘Conceptualising Talent: Privileging Change and Flexibility Onscreen and Off’ Focus: • Conceptualising talent • Issues of diversity • Stimulating talent in the nations and regions. Participants: • BBC Scotland, STV, Channel 4, Edinburgh International Film Festival • Creative Skillset, Women in Film and TV, Highlands and Island Enterprise, Screen HI • University of Roehampton, University of South Wales, Glasgow Caledonian University, University of East Anglia

Workshop Two (May 2014, Edinburgh) ‘Identifying and Nurturing Talent: Best Practice and New Pathways in the Screen Industries’ Focus: • The role of higher education and development bodies • Specific initiatives in place to identify and nurture talent • New pathways opened up due to digital technology Participants: • Creative Scotland, Screen Academy Scotland, BECTU Vision, New Danish Screen, Digicult, Distrify • UC Santa Barbara, Stony Brook University New York, University of the West of Scotland, Kings College London, Edinburgh Napier University, University of St Andrews
