  1. What is political science? How does it differ from Government 101?

  2. Our working definition an academic and research discipline that deals with the theory and practice of politics and the description and analysis of political systems and political behavior.

  3. Fields and subfields of Political Science political theory and philosophy, national systems, International relations, foreign policy, international law and organization, public administration, public law, judicial behavior, and public policy.

  4. A social science, it uses methods and techniques to relate to the kinds of data and investigatory goals sought historical documents, newspaper reports, scholarly journal articles, official records, personal observation, laboratory experiments, survey research, statistical analysis, model building, and simulation.

  5. Evolution of political science It began with a discovering the characteristics and functions of the ideal state. Beginning with Machiavelli, modern political science began to evolve based on the observation of the political institutions and actors.

  6. In the 1950s and 1960s political science was swept with a behavioral revolution stressing the systematic and rigorously scientific study of individual and group behavior.

  7. It moved towards greater depth of analysis and more specialization. It moved towards a closer working relations with other disciplines especially, economics, geography, sociology, anthropology, psychology, social psychology, biology, ecology, statistics, and communications sciences.

  8. Also students began using the scientific method to create an intellectual discipline passed on hypotheses followed by empirical verification and the ascertainment of probable trends, and of generalizations that explain individual and group political action.

  9. By the 1980s and 90s, the political science discipline placed an increasing emphasis on “relevance,” or the use of new approaches and methodologies to solve political and social problems. A major analytical tool evolved using statistical and mathematical analysis by computer.
