Invasion of Pacific Rim • Pacific Rim- Countries that border the Pacific Ocean • 1819 Singapore taken for its harbor and a trading post to China. • Dutch Control- Dutch East Asia Company (Indonesia = Dutch east Indies) Rigid colonialism • British Take Malayan Peninsula and Burma (now Myanmar) • Malaysia becomes the leading exporter of rubber. • French- Take Laos Cambodia and Vietnam and rename it French Indo China

  3. Siam (Thailand) remains Independent • Siamese King skillfully makes Siam a Neutral Zone between France and Britain • King Mongkut- modernizes Siam

US imperialism in Philippines • Philippines- US defeat Spanish in 1898 Spanish American War • Emilio Aguinaldo led the rebellion against Spanish and then felt that the US had betrayed the Philippines • 1899-1902 war between US and Philippine nationalist. US wins • “We must uplift and Christianize our little brown brothers” – President McKinley

US in Hawaii • 1790’s port to China • 1820’s Sugar plantations= 75% of Hawaiian Wealth • McKinley Tariff act forces business owners in Hawaii to call for annexation • Queen Liliuokalani calls for more Hawaiian independence- is then removed from power • Sanford Dole is named President – He then calls for President Cleveland to annex it
