  4. Romans 8 • vv.1-11 show how God wants us to live • “In the Spirit,” not “in the flesh” • Ephesians 5:18 “And do not be drunk with wine, in which is dissipation; but be filled with the Spirit.” • Like a glove “filled with”/controlled by a hand

Romans 8 • vv.12-17 tell why we should live this way • We are God’s children and Christ is our brother • 1 Peter 1:3-4 “Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who according to His abundant mercy has begotten us again to a living hopethrough the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead,4 to an inheritance incorruptible and undefiled and that does not fade away, reserved in heaven for you.” • God’s family is the greatest family in the world

Romans 8 • vv.18-25 teach why God’s family is great • Our suffering takes on a purpose • 2 Corinthians 4:17 “For our light affliction, which is but for a moment, is working for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory.” • One day God will take our suffering away • Revelation 21:4 “And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes; there shall be no more death, nor sorrow, nor crying. There shall be no more pain, for the former things have passed away.”

Romans 8 • vv.26-27 • Sometimes we don’t know how to pray • In times like these God’s Holy Spirit prays for us • Psalm 51:16-17 “For You do not desire sacrifice, or else I would give it;You do not delight in burnt offering. 17 The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit, a broken and a contrite heart—these, O God, You will not despise.”

Romans 8 • vv.29-30 • God will never give up on us • Philippians 1:6 “Being confident of this very thing, that He who has begun a good work in you will complete it until the day of Jesus Christ.” • 1 Thessalonians 5:23-24 “Now may the God of peace Himself sanctify you completely; and may your whole spirit, soul, and body be preserved blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. 24 He who calls you is faithful, who also will do it.”

Romans 8 • So don’t give . . . • If you’re not saved • Don’t give your soul for the things of this world • Don’t give the devil power over you any more • If you’re saved • Don’t give up on God • Don’t give in to your flesh • Don’t give out during the battle • Trust God to work His purpose for your good
