  2. aster- star • asterisk- a symbol (*) used to mark printed or written text, typically as a reference to an annotation or to stand for omitted matter. a thing resembling a star in shape • astronomy- the branch of science that deals with celestial objects, space, and the physical universe as a whole. • asteroid- a small rocky body orbiting the sun.

  3. grav- heavy, weight • grave - a place of burial for a dead body, typically a hole dug in the ground and marked by a stone or mound • gravity- the force that attracts a body toward the center of the earth, or toward any other physical body having mass. • gravitate- move toward or be attracted to a place, person, or thing

  4. luc, lum, lus- light • luster- a gentle sheen or soft glow, esp. that of a partly reflective surface • elucidate- make (something) clear; explain : • translucent- allowing light, but not detailed images, to pass through; semitransparent

  5. luc, lum, lus- light • lumens- the SI unit of luminous flux, equal to the amount of light emitted per second in a unit solid angle of one steradian from a uniform source of one candela. • luminary- a person who inspires or influences others, esp. one prominent in a particular sphere

  6. helio-sun • heliocentric- having or representing the sun as the center, as in the accepted astronomical model of the solar system. • heliotrope- a plant of the borage family, cultivated for its fragrant purple or blue flowers, which are used in perfume. • heliograph- a signaling device by which sunlight is reflected in flashes from a movable mirror.

  7. sol-sun • solarium- a room fitted with extensive areas of glass to admit sunlight. • solstice- either of the two times in the year, the summer solstice and the winter solstice, when the sun reaches its highest or lowest point in the sky at noon, marked by the longest and shortest days. • solar- of, relating to, or determined by the sun

  8. cosm- universe, world • cosmopolitan - familiar with and at ease in many different countries and cultures • cosmos- the universe seen as a well-ordered whole • microcosm- a community, place, or situation regarded as encapsulating in miniature the characteristic qualities or features of something much larger
