  1. How To Use a Palm Pilot Brenda Pizano August 1, 2010 EDTC 3332: Instructional Technology Practicum

  2. Needs Assessment: 1) Head Start has adopted an advance technology method for assessing students in the classroom. The technology is called a palm pilot, which is a small computer that is being used to assess the students individual needs. It has been five years since our organization adopted the palm pilot and teachers are struggling on the use of the palm pilot. The teachers have found themselves overwhelmed with many question on how to use the palm pilot.

  3. Needs Assessment: 2) The palm pilot utilized has a Readelearner program incorporated within the technology. This Readelearner program is an assessment tools used by the Head Start organization to assist teachers with an accurate result on the assessment, with the result the teacher can work with the student’s individual needs.

  4. Needs Assessment: 3) Some teachers have struggled when using a palm pilot. I believe with the appropriate web-based training on “How To Use a Palm Pilot” teachers will have a better understanding on the use and benefits of a palm pilot

  5. Instructional Goal: The instructional goal is for the teacher to be able to: • Utilize the palm pilot, create and review assessment on the palm pilot. • Upload and download from the database using the hot sync process. • become successful in utilizing the palm pilot while assessing the students.

  6. Performance Objectives: After completing this training, teachers will be able to: • Use the palm pilot (CR), and manipulate the palm pilot (B) with out any errors (CR). • Given a step-by-step instructional manual (CR), the teacher will learn how to assess students using a palm pilot (B) with 90% accuracy (CR). • Given a web-base training (CR), the teacher will learn how to synchronize the information into the computer (B) with a 90 % accuracy (CR).

  7. Assessment of Learning Outcomes:

  8. Learner Characteristics: • My target audience would be male and female teachers between the ages of 25 to 50 who are interested in learning how to assess students using a palm pilot in the work place. • The teachers must be able to read fluently, have a Bachelors Degree. • Be motivated to learn new technology skills and be able to follow a step-by-step directions and procedures, while utilizing a training module. • Teacher must have some computer skills and a basic understanding of computers

  9. Learning Context: • Training will be provided in a computer lab with access to the internet. • Teacher will have access to computer for hot sync process. • Power Point presentation will be on an overhead projector for easy view. • Power Point handouts will be given to everyone attending the training.

  10. Instructional Strategies: • Introduction: Teaching Teachers “How To Use a Palm Pilot” 1) Training Goal and Objectives (a) Brief overview of the step-by-step manual (b) Provide hands- on – training experience (c) Developing a solid understanding of the technology tools. • Training Session (a) Overview of palm pilot features (b) Creating Assessment (c) Hot sync procedures

  11. Instructional Strategies: • Assessment • (a) Teachers being able to use the palm pilot for • assessing students • (b) Be able to upload and download the database by • synchronizing the information. • (b) Be able to take a quiz at the end of the task to • evaluate for mastery of learning in the use of a • palm pilot.

  12. Instructional Resources: • Palm Pilot with Readelearner program installed • A cradle, USB cable • Access to desktop computer • Access to internet in all computer • Username and password • Power Point presentation with overhead projector and handouts

  13. Training Module Blueprint: Introduction Overview Of Palm Pilot Features Recourse and Materials Palm Pilot Hot Sync Procedures Goals and Objectives Quiz Creating Assessment

  14. Formative Evaluation: • To evaluate the design plan a peer evaluation would be conducted with a small group of people. • Feedback will be encourage from the learners through out the training session to ensure full comprehension of the training. • Hands on assessment will identify training strategies. • Quiz at the end of the session to ensure training success.

  15. Summary • In conclusion a step- by- step procedure will be conducted to help the teachers assess their students. An appropriate web- based training on “How To Use a Palm Pilot” will be created to help the teachers to have a better understanding on the use of the palm pilot when it comes to assessing the students. Having the teachers complete this training module would help resolve the problem when utilizing a palm pilot.
