Work-Based Learning: Aligning Education and Employment

Work-Based Learning is a partnership program that aligns in-school instruction with on-the-job training, allowing students to earn elective credits while gaining valuable work experience. This program is supervised by the Work-Based Learning Instructor and requires cooperation from the school, employer, student, instructor, and parent. It provides guidelines for attendance, behavior, job changes, and documentation. Key responsibilities for students include maintaining employment, notifying the instructor of any issues, and obtaining parental permission. The responsibilities of parents include supporting their child's duties in both school and work, ensuring regular attendance, and inquiring about their child's training and working conditions through the Work-Based Learning Instructional Leader. The responsibilities of the Work-Based Learning Instructor include providing academic and occupational instruction, conducting visits to the student's workplace, and assisting with educational and training matters. Documentation includes weekly and monthly wage and hour reports, training agreements, training plans, and employer evaluations. In the case when a job is not secured, students must notify the instructor immediately and maintain a job search log. Job changes must be requested using specific forms and monthly meetings are mandatory for all Work-Based Learning students, covering relevant school news, verification of student work, and assignments. Each student is also required to create an Individual Career Portfolio, which includes a career research activity/report, job description manual, resume, cover letter, and post-secondary planning.
