Enhancing Work-Based Learning: Insights from the SURF Project
The SURF Work-Based Learning (WBL) initiative, led by Prof. Mark Stiles and Project Manager Fleur Corfield, aims to improve accessibility and effectiveness of learning through innovative practices and tools. This project draws on valuable use cases and lessons learned from previous efforts like X4L and SUNIWE, emphasizing the importance of standardization and collaboration among faculties and employers. Addressing challenges such as information accessibility and learner isolation, we strive to develop a centralized approach to WBL, ensuring quality education for all stakeholders.

Where we started from: • Created Use Cases • Drawing on experience and tools from previous projects • SURF WBL & X4L • SUNIWE • Idea of “access for all”
Lessons Learnt • Software available – no “one fits all” • Contacts given high importance by those delivering courses • Standardisation of information difficult to implement when impacts across Faculties/ Services and Institutions
Issues Encountered & (Some) Resolved • Employers / mentors have immediate access to information on employee learning • No easy reference to generic support materials • Reluctance from Employers to invest time • No centralised information about WBL across SURF • Isolation of learners, mentors and employer
Further Work • Managed security of information • Centralised, standardised award/ module information • Developing communities • Enable
