  2. Third Grade Standard For Measurement NATIONAL MATH STANDARD • 3.MD.4. Generate measurement data by measuring lengths using rulers marked with halves and fourths of an inch. Show the data by making a line plot, where the horizontal scale is marked off in appropriate units GEORGIA PERFORMANCE STANDARD • Students will understand and measure time and length. They will also model and calculate perimeter and area of simple geometric figures. • M3M2. Students will measure length choosing appropriate units and tools b. Measure to the nearest ¼ inch, ½ inch and millimeter (mm) in addition to the previously learned inch, foot, yard, centimeter, and meter.

  8. What tool do we use to measure length? We measure length with a Rulers are usually divided into centimeters and inches. Some rulers include millimeters. In order to get an accurate measurement, you line up the edge of the ruler with the start of the line or side you are measuring. You read the line where the side or object ends and that is your length. Take out your rulers and show me where the centimeters are located and where the inches are located.

  10. All lengths are not WHOLE numbers • Not all measurements will be whole numbers…for example, 3 cm exactly or 6 inches exactly. • Some measurements will be between two numbers so we will have to use “part” of the next number.

  11. Practicing reading lengths How long is this paperclip?

  12. Practicing reading lengths How about this pencil eraser (just the pink part)? Does it end at the 1 mark? No…it is halfway between the edge of the ruler and the 1 which makes it “halfway” to 1 inch. This measurement is ½ inch. Half-inches are marked on rulers by the longest lines found between the whole numbers.

  13. Practicing reading lengths How long is this penny? Is it ½ inch or shorter? It is halfway between the edge of the ruler and the ½ inch mark. Do you know what HALF of one half is? ONE QUARTER is HALF of one half… so this coin would measure ¼ inch. Quarter-inches are marked on rulers by the longer lines between the half inch and whole inch marks.
