Organizational Patterns • There are many different ways to organize your writing. • We will focus on: • Compare and Contrast- identify the similarities and differences between two or three topics • Problem and Solution- state a problem and suggest one or more solutions • Chronological order- in order of time • Logical Order- in the order that makes sense logically • Cause and Effect- identify the cause for something and what happened as a result

Chronological Order Topic Examples • Describe your morning routine. What do you do before you go to school each day? • Discuss the events leading up to the American Revolutionary War. • Explain the process that candidates go through in order to run for president.
Logical Order • Where each idea supporting the thesis is arranged in an order that makes logical sense.
Logical Order Graphic Organizers • Many graphic organizers would work well for logical order. • The Mind Map is the usual choice for many.
Logical Order Topic Examples • How do you think your school could be improved. Describe at least three ways in which your school could be made better. • Why do you think the school calendar exists with such a long Summer Break? In an essay, state your opinions. Be sure to include specific examples to support your thoughts. • Which holidays do you think are the most important? Write a letter convincing your teacher of your opinion. • Explain your school’s dress code. Explain your dress code to a new student at your school.
Cause and Effect • Information is presented about an event (the cause) and what happens as a result of it (the effect).
