EQ: In what ways are organized ideas stronger ideas? • STANDARDS: • ELACC8RL1: Cite the textual evidence that most strongly supports an analysis of what the text says explicitly as well as inferences drawn from the text. • ELACC8SL4: Present claims and findings, emphasizing salient points in a focused, coherent manner with relevant evidence, sound valid reasoning, and well-chosen details; use appropriate eye contact, adequate volume and clear pronunciation. • ELACC8W4: Produce clear and coherent writing in which the development, organization, and style are appropriate to task, purpose, and audience. (Grade-specific expectations for writing types are defined in standards 1-3 above.) • ELACC8W5: With some guidance and support from peers and adults, develop and strengthen writing as needed by planning, revising, editing, rewriting, or trying a new approach, focusing on how well purpose and audience have been addressed. ACTIVATOR • Homework Review: • Clauses at the Mall • Join Clauses at the Circus • A reading from the extended text The Project by Brian Falkner.
WORK PERIOD • The students will sign up for the presentation days for their Semester Project. • The students will work in groups to jigsaw notes on the various types of organizational structures. • The students will present their findings. All other students will fill in their graphic organizers with the appropriate section. • The students will then create their own BINGO cards with the different organizational structures, DRAPES, and other ELA concepts.
Organizational Patterns • There are many different ways to organize your writing. • We will focus on: • Chronological order- in order of time • Logical Order- in the order that makes sense logically • Cause and Effect- identify the cause for something and what happened as a result • Problem and Solution- state a problem and suggest one or more solutions • Compare and Contrast- identify the similarities and differences between two or three topics
CLOSING • A continuation of each research group’s presentations.
HOMEWORK • On a sheet of notebook paper, create a graphic organizer to depict 2 of the organizational structures addressed in class.
