  1. Henry Hudson By: Elizabeth Aber Mrs. MacDonald

  2. Henry Hudson • In 1606 Henry Hudson was hired by the Dutch East India Company(DEIC) • He was looking for a water passage through North America to Asia • Holland was the country that hired him for this job FACT: Many people use the term Holland when they are referring to the Netherlands

  3. Route Hudson sailed through the north in what is now the Hudson River thinking that it would cut through the Americas and lead him to Asia. He also navigated and mapped what is now modern day New York City 4 times!

  4. Timeline • Henry Hudson was born in 1550 • In 1607 he set sail on his first voyage to look for the water passage • He was 700 miles from the north pole and as he got closer to America a big iceberg blocked him so he had to return to the Netherlands • In 1608 he set sail again, but yet more ice • In 1609 the DEIC decided to set Hudson sailing again with a crew of 18 men • Hudson was close to the north pole and his crew was becoming unruly with the severe cold so he went south to North Carolina • Finally he set sail one last time in 1610 with his crew but it grew cold and his crew set Henry on a canoe to look for the passage as they went south with 3 men • He was never seen again

  5. Effect Henry Hudson helped discover rivers in New York (even if it didn’t go straight through). His mapping also helped us understand what the rivers in the New York, Canada region were like.

  6. Fun Facts • Now Hudson has 3 places named after him, the Hudson River, valley and strait. • Henry believed there was an ice free zone that he could travel through to reach Asia • No one knows when he died, but it was sometime after June 22, 1611 when he was sent off • His voyage ended up claiming Eastern Canada in the end

  7. Conclusion I am glad I had the opportunity to learn about Henry Hudson. He was a great explorer and may have gone unnoticed at points, but he had determination. Good thing the Hudson River was named after him or it might have been something weird like the Canada/New York River!!!

  8. Henry Hudson Round of applause for Henry Hudson
