FE power and cooling

FE power and cooling. Tullio Grassi 28 of April, 2010 CMS Upgrade week. Baseline for the upgrade. 200 W per RBX Upgraded HB RBX budget: 256 QIEs  86 W 32 GBT transmitters (without laser)  32 x 1.4W = 45 W 1 to 8 GBT receivers  1.25 W to 10 W LV regulators = 40 W

  1. FE power and cooling Tullio Grassi 28 of April, 2010 CMS Upgrade week

  2. Baseline for the upgrade 200 W per RBX Upgraded HB RBX budget: • 256 QIEs  86 W • 32 GBT transmitters (without laser)  32 x 1.4W = 45 W • 1 to 8 GBT receivers  1.25 W to 10 W • LV regulators = 40 W ___________________________ TOTAL = 170 to 180 W . Not included ~32 lasers, ~6 FPGAs and other stuff

  3. LV DC-DC regulator for HCAL • Requirements has been presented to the developers and electronics coordinators. • No objections • Consensus about HCAL being a good application for the work of the CERN MIC group • Do we need a more formal agreement ?

  4. External power supplies I talked to a Wiener guy and showed our requirements. His comments: • They have solutions • Wiener supplies have feedback, and some of them have a microprocessor in the loop • It is easy to change the output voltage (just changing a transformer) • The efficiency would change but we do not care • Interaction between feedback loops of external supplies and onboard regulators is tipically debugged on the field • He said that CAEN could do the same  Apparently we have 2 commercial solutions

  5. Some suggestions for preliminary HCAL activities Model the physical dimensions of various air-core inductors with our QIE boards to determine feasibility. Evaluate planar PCB coils due to potential size advantages vs. toroids External power supplies can have remote voltage sensing, and what the feedback loop bandwidth and output impedance will be.

  6. Some suggestions for CMS activities Interference to other subsystems: ATLAS has set limits on emitted noise (from PS, voltage regulators, cabling, etc). Should CMS do the same for the upgrade ?
