Committee Charge • The Lake Washington School District Nutrition Policy Committee is charged with the development of guidelines and procedures to support and ensure that our students are provided nutritious food and beverage offerings in our schools, while balancing the need for stable vending and student store income as well as stable food service pricing. These guidelines shall included food service a la carte, student store, and vending machine offerings as well as items provided to students by parents, students and teachers.

Process • Used an Interest Based model • Monthly meetings • Progress reports to constituent groups • Research and site visits to other districts • Developed draft guidelines • Pilots of draft guidelines • Taste tests of approved products • Gathered feedback and results • Developed final draft for board presentation and implementation

  5. Pilots • Redmond High School: Student Store and Beverages • Evergreen Jr. High: A la Carte, Student Store, Lunch and Breakfast Programs • Nutrition Fairs: EJH and Rose Hill Jr. • Potato products: Food Services • Redmond High, Lake Washington High, Evergreen Jr. and Redmond Jr.

Highlights of New Policy • Curriculum and Instruction • Health and Fitness Section of Lake Washington School District Curriculum Framework aligns with Washington State EALR’s and GLE’s under development • School Environment • Conducive to and promote learning • National School Lunch/Breakfast Program • Continue to adhere to Federal Guidelines

Competitive Food Sales • No more than 40% of total calories from fat (4 grams of fat per 100 calories), except nuts, seeds and dairy products. • No more than 10% of total calories from saturated fats. • Trans-fats will be limited to the greatest extent possible. • Sugar content less than or equal to 40% of total weight, except for fresh, canned, or dried fruits and dairy products. • Not a food of minimal nutritional value as described by the Food and Nutrition Service of the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

  9. Secondary schools may offer up to 5 candy items in Student Stores and Vending Machines that exceed the above standards through the 07-08 school year. These items may not be foods of minimal nutritional value. Candy offerings will be eliminated by the 08-09 school year. This transition will be evaluated annually through 08-09 school year.

  10. Potato Products • Limited to baked products in the elementary and junior high schools and equipped high schools. • Potato products and oils will be limited to 0-trace trans fats. • Portions of fried potatoes will be limited to 3-ounces and may only be sold with a meal.

Beverages Elementary: • Milk (including flavored, 1%, 2%), juice (100%) Junior High: • During school day – water, milk (includes flavored, 1%, 2%), juice (50-100%); sports drinks (electrolyte replacement beverages), no high caffeine or herbal additive drinks • After school day – pop, regular and diet limited to 25% of offerings High School: • Water, milk (includes flavored, 1%, 2%), juice (50-100%); sports drinks (electrolyte replacement beverages), coffee and tea (caffeinated and decaffeinated), no high caffeine/herbal additive drinks • Pop (regular and diet) limited to 25% offerings

  13. Classroom Parties, Rewards, and/or Incentives • Nutritious foods encouraged • Occasional exceptions – 3 per year • Parents encouraged to bring healthy treats • Staff and PTA encouraged to provide healthy foods or non-food items

  16. Implementation • Pending Board Approval, Implementation for 06-07 school year • Annual review conducted to ensure alignment with policy and procedures by the LWSD Nutrition Policy Committee
