Jewish • Definition: A religious and ethnic group of people who trace their ancestry to Biblical Hebrews • Most Jews lived in the Middle East and Europe • There were about 9 million Jews in Europe in the late 1930s • By the end of WWII, there were about 3 million Jews in Europe
Anti-Semitism • Definition: Hatred of Jewish people • In the late 1930s, large groups of Europeans and Americans were anti-Semitic • People were anti-Semitic because they were blamed for much of what was wrong with society • This is similar to racism experienced by African American in the US
Holocaust • Definition: The mass murder of Jews and other minority groups by the Nazis starting in the late 1930s and ending in 1945 • Nazis were the main force behind the Holocaust and there were many different types of victims, although the majority of victims were Jewish
genocide • Definition: the deliberate killing of large groups of people • Why is the Holocaust considered genocide?
Concentration camps • Definition: a place where large numbers of persecuted people are imprisoned, typically under harsh conditions • The Nazi party placed concentration camps all over Europe, but mainly in Germany, Poland, and Austria • Concentration camps were where the majority of Jews and other minorities were sent in the 1940s
Yellow Star • Definition: This was the symbol used by the Nazis to identify Jews at the beginning of the Holocaust • Those who wore the star were immediately identifiable and easily rounded up during raids and arrests
ghettos • Definition: the Jewish quarter or part of the city • In many cities, once Jews were forced to wear the yellow star, they were forced to live inside the ghettos and, with few exceptions, they were not allowed to leave
Medical experimentation • Unethical experiments were performed on humans during the Holocaust, especially in concentration camps • The most famous of these experiments were done by Josef Mengele, a Nazi doctor in Auschwitz
The Final Solution • Definition: The Nazi policy of exterminating Jews • This occurred and was in effect from 1941-1945
Extermination camps • Definition: a concentration camp where large numbers of the prisoners are put to death, worked to death, or die from mistreatment • Part of the Final Solution • Unlike concentration camps, the goal of extermination camps, or death camps, was to kill those who were imprisoned • 11 million people were killed in the Holocaust. 6 million of those people were Jews.
Gas chambers • Definition: An airtight room filled with poisonous gas meant for execution • These chambers were used by the Nazis as part of the Final Solution
